FOURR!! Williamson finishes off in style as they win by 7 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series! Back of a length and outside the off. Williamson uses the pace of the bowler and opens the bat face nicely to guide it through to the right of the fielder at deep third man for a four.

If you thought the firepower displayed by Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar in the last few overs of the first innings was massive then the Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson and Tom Latham have proved you just wrong! A terrific, magnificent, wonderful, fantabulous, etc. type of an effort.
A brilliantly chased target of 307 inside 47.1 overs gives New Zealand a clinical win by 7 wickets. The Indian bowlers did well in the first powerplay restricting the scoring by bowling tight lines and lengths and also picked up an important wicket.
Shardul Thakur and Umran Malik were terrific with the ball in the first half but all hell broke loose once Tom Latham joined Kane Williamson on crease. Malik was the pick of the bowlers picking up two important wickets on debut and rattling the Kiwis with pace.
The other debutant Arshdeep Singh couldn't quite emulate his T20I performances into the bigger format and went all over the park to concede 68 off 49 legal deliveries. Washington Sundar kept things tight in the middle and was the only bowler to go below a run a ball.
Williamson paced his innings well and demonstrated how to bat on these kinds of surfaces adding an unbeaten 221 runs for the fourth wicket with Tom Latham who took his game one notch up and scored boundaries all over the park hitting 19 fours and 5 huge sixes to score his seventh ODI century which is also his best score in the format (145*).

Tom Latham (Player of the Match): "Yes, I guess one of the days. Everything came off. The partnership with Kane was great and then had fun out there reacting to their bowling. It was just in the moment, had fun and timed the chase perfectly. The preparation has been nice. I have played a few Sheffield games and then used that to perfection. It was tough. Washington was great with the ball. We had to absorb the pressure and did that very well. Yes. nice to bat with the skipper. Nice to get the win and get the momentum. Look forward to continuing this in the next few games."
Shikhar Dhawan (India Captain): "We were pleased with the total we put on the board. During the first 15 overs, the ball was seaming. This ground is a little different from others. Latham attacked after we bowled a lot on a short length. We misfielded a few balls. But, as I previously stated, we were quite short to Latham, and that is where he took the game away. In the 40th over, he hit four boundaries, and the game changed. There will undoubtedly be a lot of learning for the boys."
Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): "I thought it was a good score to chase. We had to bat well and that incredible knock from Tom Latham was incredible, to say the least, and made my job easier. Yes, we spoke with each other and that was one of the best ODI knocks I have seen from the other end. It was a good wicket and you can get to the score because of the dimensions of the ground. It's hard ground to defend in my view. That's why I bowled first. The seamers did an amazing job and we had them under pressure. They did well to get to 306, but that second half of the innings was great thanks to Latham. Yes, got my form back thanks to Tom Latham. That was just superb stuff and pleasure to be there at the other end. Looking forward to the next game on Sunday."
