10:22 PM IST, 5:52 PM Local time: Australia retain the Ashes after winning the second ODI on the last ball by a small margin of 3 runs. The visitors take an unassailable lead of 8-6 in the multi format series with this win.
England won the toss put Australia to bat first and were given a target of 283 in 50 overs after their successful chase of 264 in the previous game. Ellyse Perry scored 91, Annabel Sutherland a fine 50. Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell both picked up 3 wickets in the first innings.
In response, Tammy Beaumont provided England with a terrific start scoring 60 in 62 balls adding 66 with Sophia Dunkley for the first wicket. Georgia Wareham got the first wicket for Australia and was followed by Alana King's spell which comprised the big wickets of Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont and then Alice Capsey.
Nat Sciver-Brunt batting at number 4 took the innings ahead but it was another spinner's time to strike as Ashleigh Gardner sent back Danni Wyatt in the 29th over. Sciver-Brunt added 57 runs with Amy Jones with the latter attackingly scoring 37 in 34 balls keeping England in the hunt but Gardner returned in the 39th over to dismiss Jones and the newcomer Sophie Ecclestone.
Scive-Brunt crossed her half century which was her sixth 50+ score in last 8 ODI innings and her third in the last 4 innings against the Aussie. She managed to cross 100 and finished unbeaten on 111 getting good support from Sarah Glenn (22*) down the order but the target was a little too beyond the reach.
With 5 runs needed off the final ball, Sciver-Brunt backed herself for a big heave but could only get a single. All the wickets fell to spinners in the second innings with Alana King being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/44. Gardner (3/54) picked up wickets in key moments with Georgia Wareham getting the first breakthrough in the 12th over.
