10:56 PM IST, 6:26 PM Local Time | England win and take the lead in this 3 match ODI series. They defeat Ireland by 48 runs! A statement performance by a young England side!
Ireland won the toss and elected to field first, and the decision backfired immediately as the English openers established a quick-fire 55 run-stand within the first 6 overs to get England off to a flier. Craig Young picked up 2 wickets in the same over to bring Ireland back into the game but Will Jacks and Ben Duckett took matters into their own hands with a 102 run stand for the 3rd wicket.
Jacks missed out on his maiden ODI century as he fell at the score of 94 runs from 88 balls while Duckett too missed out on reaching the half-century mark. Ireland looked to have controlled the flow of runs but Sam Hain had other ideas. The dashing right handed batter smashed 89 runs off just 82 balls to power his team over the 300 run-mark. Brydon Carse's 30 ball 32 helped England finish with a total of 332/8 after their 50 overs.
Dockrell was the pick of the bowlers for his figures of 3/43 from 8 overs.
Come the chase, Scrimshaw's chaotic opening saw Ireland get off to a flier but two wickets in two balls for England saw them take control of the chase leaving Ireland in a spot of bother at 69/3 after 8.4 overs.
From there on England never looked back as the spinners put the choke on and Rehan Ahmed's 4/54 from 10 overs in the middle phase put victory right in England's hands. After that it was only a matter of when and not if when England would seal victory. Ireland to their credit did not go down without a fight as they kept England waiting for victory.
George Dockrell was the man again but this time with the bat as he top scored for Ireland with 43 runs from 54 balls.
But in the end it was England who defeated their fierce neighbors. They will look to seal the series victory in the next ODI while Ireland will go back to the drawing board and come out with altered plans to level the series.
