1:55 AM IST| Time to pinch yourselves😳. What drama, what game, what a final set. About 90 seconds ago, Sam Curran might be thinking- "What did I do?". He gave a second chance to the rivals to earn a victory as Curran overstepped but the calm composed allrounder nailed the yorker and ended the game on their court.
The Hundred cannot get any better. The London Derby cannot get any better. A brilliant save from Ross Whitely at the deep. Sam Curran's mishap and redemption. Some terrific display of cricket.
Arriving for a hefty chase of 190 runs, the London openers gave a rollicking start. Although Zak Crawley looked scratchy, Adam Rossington's clean striking eclipsed it. After a certain time in the first phase of the innings, runs were coming thick and fast with the wicketkeeper batter hastening to a fifty.
The Spirit were 94-0 at one point and soon they were 96-3 in a space of 6 balls. Sam Curran came in and removed a struggling Crawley with a slower one, followed by Will Jacks' couple of wickets in the successive set.
Dan Lawrence tried to revive the situation with the support of Matthew Wade and orchestrated 46 runs together. Just when things were heading in the way of the visitors, Adam Zampa was brought in and the wrist spinner who was filling the shoes of Sunil Narine toppled two wickets in an over.
Matt Critchley kept the London side in the game and did not give up easily. He found some strikes off the middle of the blade, got three sixes and a four but failed to get his side over the line,
The final set demanded 17 runs from the five balls off Sam Curran. It came down to 14 off the final three balls and Critchley smacked one for a six. The following delivery would've been a maximum too but Ross Whitely stood in the path. The domestic veteran rushed to his right and tipped the ball inside the field of play to curtail the equation to six off the final ball. A no-ball followed and Curran had to reload when the numbers came down to three required off the final ball i.e. free-hit. Curran cleaned up Chris Wood which turned out to be a dot and that's the way this contest saw its climax.
Earlier, the Oval Invincibles got to the highest runs scored in Kia Oval in Men's Hundred i.e. 189 on the back of brilliant top order batting. The openers gave a solid start, but watchful at the start and gradually switched gears. The opening pair of Will Jacks and Jason Roy glued 79 runs with Heinrich Klaasen and Sam Curran continuing with the baton.
Jacks found his golden touch at the batting paradise in Kia Oval and assaulted the opposition bowlers with 68 runs from 42 balls. Klaasen was in beast mode and unleashed 46* runs off 24 balls with four sixes and one four. On the other end of the crease it was younger Curran who joined the party and added 35 runs off 17 balls. The final phase of the innings saw a couple of wicket tumble and Oval ended the scoreboard with 189 runs.
