11:20 PM IST, 13:50 Local Time: Extras will do nicely for India as they thump West Indies by 9 wickets with three overs remaining and get the five-match T20I series level at 2-2, getting it to the decider!
Arriving at the chase, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were on a mission and thrashed the Windies bowlers left, right and centre. Jaiswal and Gill added a record-breaking opening partnership of 165 runs in 15.3 overs. The duo recorded the highest opening stand against West Indies, breaking Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan’s 158 runs partnership for the first wicket back in 2021.
Both the youngsters had a stellar IPL season for their respective franchises and were batting like a dream, completing their respective maiden T20I half-centuries. However, Gill (77 off 47) was the lone success for West Indies with Romario Shepherd providing the first and last breakthrough for his side in the 16th over.
Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 84 off 51 balls with the new number three Tilak Varma (7* off 5), staying unbeaten in another successful run chase.
Earlier in the match, West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first. Kyle Mayers (17 off 7) and Brandon King (18 off 16) got into brisk starts but failed to go big, falling prey to Arshdeep Singh inside the Powerplay with the home side getting 55 runs in six overs. Kuldeep Yadav (2/26) came into the attack straightaway after the field restrictions and accounted for the dismissals of dangerous Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell all in one over, reducing West Indies to 57/4.
Shai Hope (45 off 29) was the spectator on the other end but was ticking the scoreboard with a good innings. Hope and Shimron Hetmyer added 49 runs for the fifth wicket and took the total past 100. Yuzvendra Chahal (1/36), after three expensive overs, came back well and broke the partnership with the wicket of Hope in the 13th over. A couple of quick wickets followed this dismissal, and West Indies were again on the back foot, with the scorecard reading 123/7. Mukesh Kumar (1/25) bowled a brilliant spell in the second half of the innings and also got Jason Holder knocked over.
Hetmyer played positively and batted brilliantly, scoring 61 runs off 39 balls, hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes. Hettie was there till the last over with a very good partnership of 44 runs along with Odean Smith for the 8th wicket. Though Hetmyer became the third victim of Arshdeep (3/38), Smith (15* off 12) smashed a big six in the final ball, finishing things off in style and helping West Indies to post 178/8 in 20 overs.
Stay tuned for the post-match presentations!
