8:04 PM IST, 3:34 PM Local Time: A magnificent comeback from Sri Lanka to finish the unsuccessful tour on a high note as they defeat Ireland convincingly by 8 wickets in the 3rd and final ODI of the series at Stormont.
Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first. The opening bowlers Achini Kulasuriya (3/35) and Inoshi Fernando (1/7 in 10, 5 maidens) never allowed the Irish batters to score freely. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu also picked up 3/15 with fellow spinner Sachini Nisansala (2/35) to restrict the hosts to 122 in 46.3 overs.
The Lankan openers started off in attacking fashion. Chamari Athapaththu dealt in boundaries scoring 48 in 49 deliveries with 10 hits to the fence despite her opening partner Vishmi Gunaratne falling cheaply in the 7th over.
Athapaththu was later joined by the player in form Harshitha Samarawickrama who added 62 for the 2nd wicket with the skipper, taking the game away from the hosts.
The skipper was dismissed off a full toss by Freya Sargent when the Lankans were just 29 runs away from the win. Harshitha then picked up where the captain left the chase and finished unbeaten on 48, facing 56 balls and hitting 7 fours in total.
Sargent (1/38) and Ava Canning (1/14) were the only wicket takers for Ireland with skipper Orla Prendergast (0/13) bowling a tidy spell in the first powerplay.
Sri Lanka will be consoled with this victory as Ireland already have the series to their name winning the first two ODIs in convincing fashion. The hosts had a successful series across both formats as they tied the T20I series against the Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka and now have defeated the experienced side 2-1 in the one-day series marking their first ever ODI series win against this Asian nation.
