8:11 PM IST and 10:41 AM Local Time | West Indies have started the 2-match Test series with a win by a margin of 201 runs. Their bowlers and batters were absolutely top-notch to outplay Bangladesh in every department of the game.
Today, Windies needed only three wickets for victory. Jaker Ali and Hasan Mahmud became the victims of Alzarri Joseph and Shoriful got retired hurt and that marked West Indies' victory. Only 7 overs were bowled today and Windies wrapped the game up.
In the first day, West Indies came to bat and they were off to a shoddy start as their opener skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and number 3 batter Keacy Carty got out for cheap scores. But Kavem Hodge came to play the second fiddle with Mikyle Louis. Hodge got out for 25 but Louis continued to impress. He and Alick Athanaze were with the onus and they did that with precision. Unfortunately Louis got out for 97 and Athanaze got dismissed for 90! But Justin Greaves didn't falter in the nervous 90 and passed that phase to register his maiden Test hundred to score 115 before his team declared. Kemar Roach played a good assistant's role to Greaves as he scored 47. West Indies declared at 450/9 score. Hasan Mahmud took 3 wickets for Bangladesh.
Coming to bat in the second innings, Bangladesh openers batted out the initial hours but Zakir Hasan and Mahmudul Hasan Joy got out cheaply. Veteran batter chipped in for Bangladesh as Mominul Haque scored his third Test fifty against West Indies. He got out for 50 though. Litton Das scored 40 but got out playing the shot which he executed well. Jaker Ali played a fine knock and registered his second Test fifty before getting out for 53. Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 23 to help his team escape the follow-on. Bangladesh were 269/9 at the end of 3rd day and they declared at that score before the start of 4th day's play. West Indies pacers were dominant in their home ground.
West Indies came to bat with a lead of 181. They started showing intent right from the start. Kraigg Brathwaite started scoring runs quickly but Mikyle Louis and Keacy Carty got out quickly and they were soon followed by their skipper Brathwaite. But Alick Athanaze took the aggressor role and scored 42 before getting dismissed. Unfortunately the Caribbean lower order didn't contribute much as only Alzarri Joseph scored 17 quickly to help the team score go past the 150-run mark. West Indies got bundled out for 152 and gave the visitors a mammoth 334-run target for victory. Taskin Ahmed was the star of the bowling show for Bangladesh as he took 6 wickets for 64 runs. He was brilliant to pick up his maiden fifer in Test cricket.
334 was too big a total to chase for Bangladesh as it was 125 more than their highest successful run chase in Test cricket. Zakir Hasan got out in the very first over and Mahmudul Hasan Joy joined his opening partner. Mominul Haque looked horrible in his 33-ball stay. He got out as Kemar Roach took a magnificent catch on his follow-through. Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took the aggressor's role but they didn't sustain. Litton scored 22 off 18 balls and Mehidy got out for 45 off 46 balls. Jaker Ali showed some resilience but he lost his partner Taijul Islam for 4. Jaker Ali and Hasan Mahmud were in the crease to start the final day as Bangladesh are reeling way behind at 109-7, needing 225 more for victory. Hasan Mahmud got out in the second over of the day. Jaker Ali got out soon for 31 and Shoriful Islam was retired hurt. Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales were the stars of the attack. Alzarri wrapped up with two wickets today.
