5:52 PM IST & 5:22 PM Local Time| A dominant display from the Kiwis in the 2nd match of the Tri-Series! New Zealand cruise to a comprehensive 6-wicket victory over South Africa, sealing the chase with 8 balls to spare. Kane Williamson once again leads from the front, guiding his side to yet another comfortable win. New Zealand have booked their spot in the Tri-Nation Series Final.
Earlier in the day, Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bowl first on a flat pitch in Lahore. South Africa fielded an inexperienced side, featuring four debutants in their ODI line-up. The seamers found some early movement, with William O'Rourke making life tough for the South African openers. He eventually broke through, dismissing Temba Bavuma for 20 during the powerplay.
As the match went on, batting conditions improved significantly, and South Africa needed to put up a formidable total given their weak bowling attack. Matthew Breetzke and Jason Smith built a vital 93-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, followed by a substantial 131-run stand between Breetzke and Mulder for the 4th wicket.
Matthew Breetzke, one of South Africa's debutants, displayed great composure at the crease, playing each ball on its merit. He became the 4th South African to score a century on ODI debut. After reaching his hundred, he shifted gears and quickly raced to 150, becoming the first player to achieve this feat on ODI debut. It was a record-breaking innings from the young talent, as he was eventually dismissed for 150 off 148 balls.
Wiaan Mulder continued his innings, batting nearly till the end and helping his team surpass the 300-run mark. By the end of their 50 overs, South Africa posted a total of 304/6. However, on a very flat surface in Lahore, this score seemed insufficient, to be honest.
Matt Henry (2/59) and William O'Rourke (2/72) each took two wickets, setting up New Zealand with a target of 305 runs to chase in their 50 overs to secure a spot in the Tri-Nation Series Final.
In reply, New Zealand began their innings solidly with the bat. The opening partnership of 50 runs was disrupted by Eathan Bosch, another debutant, who claimed his first ODI wicket by dismissing Will Young for 19.
Devon Conway was joined by Kane Williamson at the crease, and the pair capitalized on the batting-friendly conditions, forging a massive partnership for the 2nd wicket. South Africa had no response to their masterclass, as the duo played risk-free cricket and effectively took the game away from the Proteas.
Kane Williamson, ever composed, reached his 14th ODI century. Meanwhile, Devon Conway narrowly missed out on a well-deserved hundred, falling for 97 to Junior Dala. It was a spectacular catch by Muthusamy at backward point.
Kane Williamson (133*) stayed unbeaten at the crease, steering his team to victory. New Zealand comfortably defeated South Africa by 6 wickets, securing their place in the Tri-Series Final. Stay tuned for the Post-Match Presentation.
