Sri Lanka looked like they were cruising in the run chase till about 15th over but then they lost wickets in clusters and were eventually bowled out for 141 with 5 balls to spare. Jacob Duffy was the wrecker-in-chief with a four-wicket haul.
Earlier in the game, New Zealand were asked to bat first and they posted a formidable total of 186/5 from their 20 overs.
The Kiwis got off to a poor start, losing Rachin Ravindra early in the piece. Mark Chapman and Tim Robinson then added 69 runs for the second wicket.
Chapman top-scored with a knock of 42 while Robinson made 41. A late cameo by Mitchell Hay, who remained unbeaten on 41 off 19 balls took New Zealand to 186.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early in the run chase. Kamindu Mendis again failed with the bat for the visitors.
Pathum Nissanka was good yet again, scoring 37 from 28 balls. Kusal Perera top-scored with a knock of 48, missing his half-century by just 2 runs. Charith Asalanka added 20 with the bat, but then the lower middle order fell like nine pins.
Jacob Duffy picked up 4/15 while Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner got two wickets apiece. Michael Bracewell and Zakary Foulkes bagged one wicket each to bowl out Sri Lanka for 141.
