2:28 PM IST, Local Time: That’s it. Mumbai enter the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. The bowlers did a fine job to restrict Baroda to 158 before Ajinkya Rahane displayed a T20 batting masterclass which helped his side chase down the total in just 17.2 overs with six wickets in hand. Baroda's journey in this year's competition comes to an end.
Chasing 159, Mumbai got off to a blazing start, thanks to Ajinkya Rahane who played some magnificent strokes upfront. His opening partner Prithvi Shaw scored eight off nine balls before being dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Skipper Shreyas Iyer joined Rahane at the crease who continued going strong as Mumbai finished the powerplay on 61/1.
The Baroda bowlers looked clueless on the field as the pair of Rahane and Shreyas took the second-wicket stand past 50. Rahane carried forward his right form and brought up his third successive fifty off just 28 balls. Mumbai were cruising before Shreyas holed out in the deep on 46 as the 88-run stand was broken in the 13th over by Atit Sheth.
There was no stopping Rahane though as he continued going berserk at the other end and entered into the 90s. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav gave Rahane a chance to bring up his hundred by playing out dot balls. Rahane scored 98 off 56 before falling when Mumbai required two to win. Suryakumar also departed on one but Suryansh Shedge finished things off in style as Mumbai entered the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024.
Earlier, Baroda were asked to bat first in overcast conditions. After losing Abhimanyusingh Rajput (9) early in the innings, Shashwat Rawat and Krunal Pandya led the recovery work and put 50 between them. Mumbai stormed back into the contest by sending back Krunal (30), Bhanu Pania (2), Rawat (33) and Hardik Pandya (5) in quick succession. Vishnu Solanki also fell cheaply on six.
Shivalik Sharma was joined by Atit Sheth and both put 49 between them for the seventh wicket to help Baroda finish with a flourish. Sheth fell on 22 in the last over but cameos from Shivalik (36*) and Mahesh Pithiya (6*) helped Baroda post 158 on the board. Each of the six Mumbai’s bowlers picked up at least a wicket, with Suryansh Shedge finishing with two. Rahane then scored a quickfire 56-ball 98 to help Mumbai chase down the total comfortably and storm into the final.
