1:31 AM IST & 9:01 PM Local Time: Trent Rockets begin their campaign in style, thrashing Birmingham Phoenix by 6 wickets with 22 balls remaining. A dominant all-round display and a perfect start to the season for the Men in Yellow.
Birmingham Phoenix won the toss and chose to bat, but their innings got off to a nightmare start. The top three – Duckett, Smeed, and Donald – were all back in the hut by the fourth set, leaving the hosts reeling at 12/3. Jacob Bethell soon joined them, dismissed for just 5. Trent Rockets made full use of the conditions, striking early and putting Phoenix on the back foot right from the outset.
Joe Clarke and Liam Livingstone steadied the ship for Birmingham Phoenix with a vital 63-run stand off 51 balls for the fifth wicket, injecting some much-needed momentum into the innings. However, both set batters fell in the same set to Lockie Ferguson, who was outstanding with the ball. Late cameos from Dan Mousley (18* off 10) and Benny Howell (13* off 8) pushed Phoenix to a modest 122/6 from their 100 balls. Lockie Ferguson was the standout for Trent Rockets, finishing with superb figures of 3/20.
Chasing 123, Trent Rockets needed a solid start and got exactly that as Phoenix’s Kiwi pace trio — Boult, Southee, and Milne — struggled with their lines. Tom Banton set the tone in the powerplay, finding boundaries at will, while Rehan Ahmed impressed at No. 3 with some delightful strokes. Their stand put the Rockets in complete control, despite both falling in quick succession — Banton for 43 (29) and Ahmed for 25 (16).
Max Holden then guided the chase with a calm unbeaten 22 off 13 balls, sealing a comfortable win with 22 balls to spare. Notably, every match so far in the Men’s Hundred 2025 has been won by the chasing side!
