What makes a champion side? Resilience? The belief to pull it off from any situation? Or just the doggedness of fighting it out in any given situation? Well, Southern Brave exhibited it all today. The target they put up on the board was underwhelming. After 55 balls in the run chase, Fire had lost only one wicket. Both Beaumont and Matthews looked comfortable and set. Yet, the home team turned it around.
The best part? It wasn't due to just one player going through a freak spell. It was a team effort. They kept at it and eventually, the batters made mistakes. Yes, Lauren Bell finish with an outstanding 4/6, but those wickets were spread across different phases. She dismissed the WF skipper and Jess Jonassen in the 12th set and then returned to pick two more wickets off the final five balls of the match.
The run out of Georgia Elwiss, perhaps, embodies perfectly the spirit with which they played. The result seemed to be a foregone conclusion by then. Yet, Freya Kemp dived on the hard square, scrapping her arm in the process, but managed to get the dismissal.
In the end, Fire barely managed to bat out the full 100 balls — kind of sums up their season. Though there were some positives in the bowling department today. Led by veterans Shabnim Ismail and Hayley Matthews, they performed as a unit and kept the strong batting line-up of Brave to a mediocre score. Sophie Devine not coming out to bat until no.8 hurt the home team, but it was the part of a conscious plan to give the other batters more time in the middle. In the end, it all worked out beautifully for them.
