4:40 PM IST, 7:10 PM Local Time: Australia register a comfortable 7-wicket win in the series opener against India. Mitchell Marsh played a captain's knock of 46 in 52 balls remaining unbeaten after the bowlers set up the tone of the rain-hit fixture at Perth Stadium. The host's first ever win at the venue.
Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first. India never looked to get a good start as the top 3 comprising of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were back in the hut for 25 runs. Rain interrupted play on 4 occasions and finally the game was reduced to 26 overs per side.
KL Rahul hit 2 fours and as many sixes top scoring with 38. Axar Patel also played a good hand with 31. Nitish Kumar Reddy on ODI debut hit 2 sixes to finish unbeaten on 19 in 11 deliveries. Josh Hazlewood (2/20) was the pick of the bowlers with Mitchell Starc (1/22) also bowling a fine spell which included sending Kohli off for a duck.
Mitchell Marsh attacked since the first over but Travis Head after hitting 2 boundaries was sent back by Arshdeep Singh in the second over of the chase pushing India's hopes high. Axar Patel then sent back Matthew Short for 8 in the 8th over but Marsh played the aggressor and continued to milk the boundaries.
The Aussie skipper hit 3 sixes, couple of them over the cover region to put the young Indian bowling attack under pressure. Josh Philippe at number 4 scored 37 in 29 balls to add 55 for the 3rd wicket.
Matt Renshaw on his ODI debut remained unbeaten with 21 in 24 balls hitting a four and a six; scoring the winning run in the 22nd over. Marsh played a brilliant hand but missed out on his half century by just 4 runs.
Axar (1/19) bowled a tidy spell using his experience well with Mohammed Siraj opening the bowling with a 5-over spell of 0/21. Rest of the bowlers bowled well in patches but were expensive thanks to the onslaught brought by the in-form Marsh playing in front of his home crowd.
