10:18 AM IST, 5:48 PM Local Time: A complete display of dominance from New Zealand Women as they outclassed South Africa Women by a massive 80 runs to win the opening match of the five-match series.

Earlier, New Zealand Women posted 190/7 after being asked to bat first, thanks to brilliant fifties from Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer. The innings began on a poor note with Isabella Gaze run out for a diamond duck, but Kerr and Plimmer steadied the innings with an aggressive 146-run partnership. Kerr scored a superb 78 off 44 balls, while Plimmer contributed 63 off 44 deliveries. The hosts looked set to cross 200, but South Africa Women pulled things back in the death overs with a cluster of wickets. Masabata Klaas (2/15) and Nadine de Klerk (2/32) led the bowling effort as New Zealand finished on a competitive total.

In reply, South Africa Women got off to a shaky start, losing wickets at regular intervals. Sune Luus (10), Laura Wolvaardt (0), Annerie Dercksen (7), and Chloe Tryon (9) departed cheaply, leaving their side in deep trouble. Tazmin Brits held one end but struggled to score quickly and was eventually dismissed for 29 off 35 balls.

The White Ferns’ bowlers maintained the pressure throughout, picking up regular wickets and never allowing the visitors to stage a comeback in the game. The Proteas Women were eventually restricted to a paltry 110/7 in their 20 overs, as the White Ferns registered a massive 80-run victory. 

Sophie Devine starred with the ball for the hosts, registering her career-best T20I figures of 4/12, while Jess Kerr chipped in with a couple of wickets.

Player of the Match: Amelia Kerr

Amelia Kerr (Player of the Match): "[On her knock today] Obviously, came in early than I thought. Just building a partnership with Georgia. With the depth we have in the batting, we can take the game on.

[On the intent shown while batting] I think when you are batting in the powerplay, you can hit boundaries. You can face dot balls but try to hit the gaps and hit the boundaries.

[On her current form with the bat] I don't believe too much in form. You have to take each game as it comes. Trust your process and hopefully, it comes off.

[Does captaincy help you while batting] It does. But I think even before I was the captain, I was eager to put performances for New Zealand. Just try to play in the style that we want to play and take this team forward."

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa Women Captain): "[What's your reflections on that performance?] Yeah, definitely not our best day out. Credit to New Zealand though, they played really well and outplayed us in all aspects of the game. The way we started both innings probably didn’t help either. I think we managed only one or two boundaries in the powerplay, while they got off to a flyer with the bat. We’ve got a couple of days to reset, but yeah, they were simply better than us today.

[What's the biggest thing that you'll take away from this game?] Probably just execution. You could see they had clear plans and executed them really well against our batters. I think we just mis-executed a bit today. We’ll have some good discussions tomorrow and see where we can improve.

[On Masabata Klaas] Yeah, she’s been exceptional. She just seems to be really enjoying her cricket. She was quite vocal out there today and looked like she was loving every moment. I think she was also very proactive with the ball, setting her fields and bowling the right deliveries to us, whereas the rest of us were probably a bit reactive. So yeah, she really showed us how it should be done today."

Amelia Kerr (New Zealand Women Captain): "[On the team's approach?] That's the blueprint for us. You sometimes lose wickets but each player can have that intent. Sometimes you have to go harder. I think each of the bowlers did a great job. Even nailing those yorkers in the death. Izzy Sharp was also great diving out on the boundary.

[Things to do moving ahead in the series] I think the key is to continue to step up every game. Moving forward and going to Hamilton, it's about repeating those performances."

A sheer display of dominance from New Zealand Women in the opening game of the five-match T20I series, as they thrashed South Africa Women by 80 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. It was a mediocre performance with both bat and ball from the Proteas Women, and they will need to address their shortcomings ahead of the next game.
