4:38 PM IST, 10:08 PM local time: Melbourne Stars Women have thumped Sydney Sixers Women by 111 runs (DLS method).
The Melbourne Stars supporters who came to the ground today will go away with a feeling of immense satisfaction, relief and joy today. Remember, they were in a dominant position against Adelaide Strikers earlier this season when the sky started leaking after just 4.2 overs in the second innings? Something similar might have happened here, but fortunately for them, the rain relented and the match could reach fruition.
Also, they had the privilege of witnessing, not one but two all-time classic performances. The first was obviously Meg Lanning's sumptuous 135 (74). Her start was not the quickest but the omens were there for all to see. One cracking shot after the other was unfurled to send the ball to the boundary at regular intervals. She completed her half-century in 41 balls before hitting mode turbo and racing to 100 in just 61 balls. Such was exquisiteness of her shot-making that Rhys McKenna's 34-ball-50 almost did not even become a topic of discussion.
Despite the Stars notching up 219/4, there was a feeling that the run chase was still on. After all, the wicket appeared to be a batter's friend and the Sixers boasted the firepower of Perry, Healy, Dunkley and Gardner in their ranks. However, they got Kim Garth'ed. The new ball bowler seemed to have the ball on string. A delectable in-swinger got Dunkley out off the first ball that the right-arm seamer. Healy was dismissed of the very next ball. Then, Perry got undone by an away-nipper and Else Hunter played all over one to give Garth her fourth wicket.
The downward slide did not halt even after the rain break and Sydney Sixers ended up getting bundled out for their lowest ever score in WBBL history.
