Kawya Kavindi to Stafanie Taylor
RALLY ROUND THE WEST INDIES TIME at the West Indies dressing room! They are on their way to punch the ticket into the semi-finals. A dropped catch at mid wicket from Ayodhya, and it allows Taylor to cross over. Fuller one at the middle stump, the veteran miscues the slog and finds the fielder diving forward. However, a dropped catch and this leads to hat-trick of wins for the Windies.

WI-W won by 5 wickets
6:15 PM IST and 1:45 PM Local Time: West Indies win three in a row, equalising the points tally with the hosts England. They march on to be one of the favourites to qualify for the knockouts. But there's still time for it as the mathematical equation doesn't confirm any.

The West Indies, have been a force to reckon with in this tourney. Although their batting faltered in a paltry chase, Stafanie Taylor's calm and composed 27* got them over the line.

Arriving for a paltry chase of 99-run target in this important clash, West Indies got off to a brisk start with the bat. However, Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin couldn’t go all along the way in their natural flow with the bat. The former was runout inside the powerplay while the latter followed suit in the phase’s last over. With 36 runs in the powerplay, 18 runs came in the next wicket-stand before Shemaine Campbell fell victim to a controversial decision from the TV umpire.

The middle order added 33 runs in the next five overs for a wicket before Kavisha Dilhari made the ride bumpy for the chasing side. She got rid of Shemaine Campbelle and Chinelle Henry in a single over to push West Indies on the back foot. With 28 runs needed to win and five wickets left, the going wasn’t that tough for West Indies. There were chirps, morale-raising yells, but Stafanie Taylor seemed unbothered by it. With Jannillea Glasgow by her side, the pair overhauled the deficit with 23 balls to spare.

Being put to bat first, Sri Lanka faced some serious heat from the opposition bowlers inside the powerplay. Hayley Matthews and Chinelle Henry were extraordinary with the new ball, making the most out of the new ball. The West Indies captain enforced three quick wickets before Henry bagged one at the final over of the powerplay. In no time the Lankans were pushed on the back foot and halfway down the innings, they even lost half the batters. They were 58/6 in 10.2 overs and seemed in deep waters. Subsequently, Nilakshi de Silva used the crease brilliantly to score a 26-ball 30 and propel the Lankan side to 98 runs in 19.4 overs. Matthews was the pick of the bowlers with a three-fer and Karishma Ramharack bucketted a couple in her pocket.

Stay tuned to get a glimpse of what the captains and player has to stay.
Trivia: Sri Lanka Women conceded 23 extras against West Indies Women today, the second-most extras ever conceded in a Women's T20 World Cup innings, behind South Africa Women's 24 against Sri Lanka Women at Gros Islet in 2018.
Hayley Matthews (Player of the Match)- "(On her performance) Well, I had the opportunity to start things off with the ball, and yeah, I felt like I wanted to hopefully get the team off to a really good start, and we knew early wickets were going to be crucial against a team like Sri Lanka. Yeah, I think the wicket really favoured the spin style of bowling a lot. So yeah, thankfully I was able to put it on the spot and get a couple early on.

(On the selection of Ashmini Munisar) Well, I think looking at the lineup of Sri Lanka, they do have a lot of left-handers within their side. And we felt like someone like Ashmini could make a massive difference with her off-spin and the way she bowls. So she came in today and performed wonderfully as well. And yeah, kudos to her. I think coming in for her first World Cup match and playing how she did.

(On the batting) I think it’s okay. Like, at the end of the day, we got over the line. I don’t feel like there was any point in time where we thought we weren’t going to get any runs. Yes, we lost five wickets, but we were still in a very comfortable position throughout the innings. And I certainly feel like if we’re batting the way we are right now or playing the way we are right now and getting over the line when we have some of our batters peaking at the right time, it might be good for us.

(On her father being in the stands and he would be pleased with the performance) 100%. He’s always here at the ground supporting. So yeah, good that I could get one in front of him."
Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka Women Captain): "(On their batting and total they ended up with) The wicket is a little bit sticky today, and there was a little bit of hold on the wicket and the tennis ball bounce, so I feel the West Indies bowled according to their plans and according to their condition. Yeah, we have not executed our plans in the powerplay. We lost a couple of wickets early, and throughout the game we struggled as a batting unit. So I feel we have to score 140 plus; otherwise, we can’t defend against this West Indies team. But unfortunately, we lost a couple of wickets and struggled in the middle.

(Bowlers performed well despite defending a low total) Yeah, definitely, our bowlers bowled well, but we conceded a lot of extras, which we cannot afford to give. But the thing is, the 100 is not enough to defend, especially against West Indies. So we need to score more runs; otherwise, we can’t blame the bowlers.

(On the positives from the match) So, the bowling department did well for us. We need to improve our batting going forward."
Hayley Matthews (West Indies Women Captain): "[On winning the toss and bowling first] I think it was a crucial toss for sure. We definitely felt like we had a bit of tennis ball bounce early on. So yeah, really good that we got to go to the ball and take advantage of that.

[On bringing in Munisar and the tactical decision to play an extra spinner] I think a bit of the tactical awareness against a team like Sri Lanka, but also certainly feel like we have enough batters down the line. And I guess having that extra spinner could have really made a difference, which sure, today.

[On losing wickets during the chase and was there any pressure in the camp] Certainly no pressure. We were at 36 after six overs. We’re right on top of the game. Stafanie was at the crease, and we still had players like Aaliyah Alleyne to come in as well. So I don’t think we had any nerves at any point in time. Probably would have liked to chase it down a bit more convincingly, but I think chasing totals like that can always be a bit tricky. But at the same time, like I said earlier, I certainly feel like our batters are going to have opportunities to peak at the right time. And what’s really important is that we’re winning matches right now.

[On her performance] It was really crucial for us to get some early wickets. We know Sri Lanka’s really big batters are the ones at the top of the order, with their two left-handers at Chamari and the other one as well. So, yeah, I think for us, we just really wanted to get some early wickets, and it gave me the flexibility to be able to go hard in the power play and bowl a few overs with Munisar coming in as well.

[On West Indies winning three matches from three] It puts us in a really good place. You know, going into the next match against England, I think we’ve got high confidence. But yeah, I certainly feel like if we can win one more game here, it gets us into the semifinals. So, yeah, a lot of confidence going into the next two matches, but still just want to take it one game at a time."
West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews would be elated to get the third win on a row. An outstanding effort from West Indies as they outclass Sri Lanka in Bristol today. With equal points as that of hosts England, they would be looking to continue the momentum hereon. For Sri Lanka, the they will have to pull up the socks and take motivation from the victory against New Zealand.
