9:58 PM IST, 6:28 PM Local Time: What a grab by Vihaan Malhotra in the deep to finish things off. He has been an absolute star in the latter stage of this game. India U19 win this rain-affected game by 18 runs (DLS method). They win their second match of this U19 World Cup. Bangladesh U19 players must be holding their heads thinking how they have lost after dominating the Indian team for the majority of the game.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bowl on a surface that had visible dampness and offered assistance to bowlers. Their decision was justified early as India lost wickets in quick succession, struggling to come to terms with a pitch where the ball held up and gripped from a back-of-a-length area.
Just when Bangladesh seemed to be on top, India found stability through a composed partnership between Abhigyan Kundu (80) and Vaibhav Suryavanshi (72). Batting with maturity beyond their years, the duo absorbed pressure, played the conditions intelligently, and rebuilt the innings with a blend of patience and timely strokeplay. Their effort laid the foundation for a competitive total. Late contributions from Kanishk Chouhan (28) further strengthened India’s innings, helping them reach a fighting score despite regular challenges from the bowlers.
Due to a rain interruption during their innings, the match was initially reduced to 49 overs per side and India U19 got all for 238 in 48.4 overs.
For Bangladesh, seamer Al Fahad was the standout performer with the ball, claiming a five-wicket haul. He bowled with discipline and control, consistently troubling the batters and keeping Bangladesh firmly in the contest.
Chasing the total, Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the first over itself. However, from there, Rifat Beg (37) and skipper Azizul Hakim (51) added 56 runs for the second wicket. Even after Beg's dismissal, Bangladesh were going well and kept the required run-rate in check.
The side was at 90/2 in 17.2 overs when another rain interruption came in and players had to be off the field for a long while. After the rain delay, the target was revised to 165 runs in 29 overs. However, no one knew that Bangladesh batters would start falling like nine pins from this position. Crucial moments swung the game back towards India. Missed chances in the field earlier in the day came back to haunt Bangladesh, while the Indian bowlers tightened their lines as pressure mounted.
Mhatre brought in part-time spinner Vihaan Malhotra into the attack, and that proved to be a magical decision. Malhotra bowled four overs and took 4/14. Bangladesh slumped from 106/2 to 146/10 and gave India U19 a win by 18 runs (DLS method).
Out of the last seven batters, five of them were dismissed for a single-digit score. Skipper Hakim got holed out on a juicy full-toss even after playing 70-odd deliveries.
Some excellent fielding by the Indian players turned the tables and gave them their second win on the trot in the U19 WC 2026. They will now face New Zealand U19 on January 24 in their last group game.
