The hosts won the toss and elected to bowl first. India got off to a good start with Shafali Verma (34 off 20) going all guns blazing to add 46 in the first 5 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues (36 off 29) and Harmanpreet Kaur (47 off 33) added 71 runs for the 3rd wicket and helped India post 157/7 in 20 overs.
Ayabonga Khaka was the pick of the bowlers with 3/16. Tumi Sekhukhune picked up 2/27 and Nonkululeko Mlaba picked up 1/30 for the Proteas.
South Africa didn't get the best of starts as Sune Luus was dismissed for 13 off 7 after hammering Shreyanka Patil for consecutive boundaries, the off spinner coming back to rattle the off stump.
Skipper Laura Wolvaardt ensured the poor deliveries were put away to the boundary adding 48 runs for the 2nd wicket with Tazmin Brits (10 off 13). Shree Charani introduced in the 8th over removed Brits first ball which brought Annerie Dercksen to the middle.
The 3rd wicket pair of Wolvaardt and Dercksen was the difference between the two teams as the duo added 52 runs between them. Wolvaardt was caught in the deep off Shreyanka for 51 in 39 balls hitting 8 fours, Arundhati Reddy went for few boundaries but got a key breakthrough soon after in form of Anneke Bosch.
Dercksen was well set at the crease and got able support from Chloe Tryon. The required rate was kept in check throughout and with 6 needed off the final over, Tryon smashed one over midwicket for a biggie.
There was a key moment in the 18th over when Renuka Singh Thakur put down a sitter to give a life to Dercksen for 41. A wicket at that stage could have exposed the Proteas tail even further.
Shreyanka (2/26) was the pick of the Indian bowlers. Shree Charani was also economic with 1/26 in her 4 overs. No other bowler had an economy rate below 8. The second T20I will be played on Sunday at the same venue.

Ayabonga Khaka (Player of the Match): (On her bowling figures of 3/16) “To be honest, those figures were about the team bouncing back. We had some honest discussions after a tough outing, and today was about improving on those areas.
(On bowling well on a dry surface) It was about keeping things simple and hitting our lines and lengths. That was our plan before the game, and I think the bowling unit executed it brilliantly. Then the batters came in and finished the job for us.
(On understanding her game better with experience) You keep learning about yourself every day. There is always room for improvement. I’ve played for a long time, so I understand my strengths, but I always try to become a better bowler.”
(On bowling well on a dry surface) It was about keeping things simple and hitting our lines and lengths. That was our plan before the game, and I think the bowling unit executed it brilliantly. Then the batters came in and finished the job for us.
(On understanding her game better with experience) You keep learning about yourself every day. There is always room for improvement. I’ve played for a long time, so I understand my strengths, but I always try to become a better bowler.”

[takeaways from the game] A lot of learnings for sure. We had one month after the Australia series. The group has just come together. The next match is a day game. We have had 2 sessions in the afternoon so we are well prepped.
[on her form] Been batting well in the nets but didn't come off today. If you get out on low scores, you are always pumped out to go big in the next game and win for your country."

(On her personal form and mindset) I felt much better out there today. I had a difficult tour of New Zealand, so I went back to basics and focused on the things I do well. I’m happy it all came together. The ball was coming onto the bat nicely, so I knew I just had to play proper cricket shots.
(On preparation for the next match) I think rest and recovery will be important. One of the keys today was our energy in the field, so we want to bring that same energy into the next game.”
