1:41 AM IST, 9:11 PM local time: You've heard it a bazilion times before — "the key to doing well in tournaments is peaking at the right time". At this moment, the Essex fans will tell you that they whole-heartedly agree. It was a stop-start beginning to the tournament for them. However, by winning their last two matches convincingly, they have now booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Men's T20 Blast 2026.
Tonight, they have steamrolled Surrey. They win by 8 wickets, with 19 balls to spare. What's even better is the fact that Michael Pepper found form. Those who have followed him over the years know how dangerous he can be when on song. He wasn't quite at his best over the last month or so, but an unbeaten knock of 71* (56) in this virtual knockout will do his confidence a world of good.
Though, it won't be wrong to say that it were the bowlers who set this win up. After the Surrey openers threw their wickets away in the powerplay, Matthew Critchley led the way through the middle. The leggie spun a web around Surrey's middle order with some excellent bowling. He finished with 3/16 off his 4 overs and accounted for the dismissals of Dan Lawrence, Josh Philippe and Jordan Clarke.
Charlie Bennet, who got to bowl only 2 overs, got rid of the big names — Jason Roy and Ollie Pope — and returned 2/13. Shane Snater, Sam Cook and captain Simon Harmer were the other wicket-takers. Barring Philippe, no other Surrey batter got 30+. If not for Chris Jordan's exuberant 16-ball-25, they would have not even got to 123.
Some would say that the writing was on the wall at the end of the first innings itself. Pepper's splendid knock made it look like a walk in the park.
