5:06 PM IST & 10:06 PM Local Time: The Adelaide Strikers’ brave fight eventually fades away in the backend of the chase. They showed plenty of intent for most parts but lost their way under pressure in the closing overs. It’s a comprehensive performance from the Perth Scorchers as they close out a convincing 32-run victory.
Earlier in the day, the Adelaide Strikers won the bat flip and chose to chase on what was a belter of a surface at the Adelaide Oval. Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen set the tone right from ball one, going hammer and tongs and putting the bowlers under immediate pressure. The openers got the Perth Scorchers off to an absolute flyer, finding the fence at will and controlling the Powerplay. At the end of the 4-over Powerplay, the Scorchers had raced away to 69/0, which went down as the second-highest 4-over Powerplay score in BBL history.
Lloyd Pope finally provided the breakthrough by breaking the dangerous opening stand, as Finn Allen perished for a rapid 38 off just 18 balls. However, the ‘Bison’, Mitchell Marsh was simply unstoppable tonight, dominating the bowling attack and setting the tone for a massive total. He top-scored for the Scorchers with a brutal knock, smashing 6 fours and 7 sixes, but fell agonizingly short of a well-deserved hundred, dismissed for 88 by Boyce.
Strong and timely contributions followed down the order, with Josh Inglis hammering 42 off 23 balls, Aaron Hardie adding a crucial unbeaten 34 off 22, and skipper Ashton Turner finishing in style with 20* off just 8 deliveries. Powered by 16 sixes in the innings, the Perth Scorchers piled up a mammoth 232/4 from their 20 overs. Lloyd Pope (2/36) was the pick of the bowlers for the Strikers.
In reply, the Adelaide Strikers showed plenty of fight and refused to go down without a battle as Alex Carey and Matthew Short gave them a blazing start at the top. The openers made full use of the Powerplay, racing along to 49/0 after 4 overs and keeping the chase alive early on. They were smart in holding onto wickets as the innings progressed, with both Carey and Short looking in sublime touch. The strong 93-run opening stand was finally broken by Aaron Hardie when Short departed for a well-made 52.
Chris Lynn began positively but fell for 18 off 11 balls, and from that point on, the Strikers lost momentum and collapsed badly as the pressure mounted. From a strong position of 125/2, the Adelaide Strikers suffered a dramatic collapse, slipping to 167/8 as wickets fell in clusters and the game slowly drifted away from the home side. The pressure told in the middle and death overs, with the scoring drying up and new batters unable to settle. Ashton Turner marshalled his troops superbly. The Strikers eventually limped to 200/8 from their 20 overs, falling 32 runs short of the target. David Payne was outstanding with the ball for the Scorchers, finishing as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/35.
