UPDATE: 🚨 Rain wasn’t the only factor to call off the game, and you might be wondering 🤔 why the match was called off so quickly. The umpires had a much bigger concern to deal with.
During the Strikers’ warm-up to take the field, a wayward throw caused the ball to slip under the roller, which was pressed into the surface as the curator continued rolling the pitch, creating a hole in the pitch. Despite the ground staff’s efforts, the damage left the surface uneven and materially different from what the Strikers had batted on earlier.
After discussions between the umpires and the match referee, it was deemed unreasonable and unsafe to expect the Hurricanes to bat on a surface that had changed so drastically. With rain also lingering around, the officials were left with no option but to abandon the match, resulting in both teams sharing the points.
