8:09 AM IST & 10:39 PM Local Time: For the third time in a row, the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons have defeated the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. After beating them twice last season, the Falcons edged past them again tonight in a thrilling encounter. Shamar Springer held his nerve in the final over, successfully defending 14 runs — most of it bowled to the experienced Kieron Pollard.
Earlier in the game, TKR won the toss and opted to bowl first. Their bowlers did a remarkable job up until the 14th over.
The Antigua & Barbuda Falcons were reeling at 77/5 when Fabian Allen walked in and played one of the finest counter-attacking innings of the tournament. He blazed his way to 45 off just 20 balls, adding a rapid 69-run stand off only 30 deliveries with skipper Imad Wasim for the sixth wicket.
Imad then joined forces with Shamar Springer, and the pair added 21 crucial runs for the seventh wicket — helping the Falcons cross the 160-run mark, a target that had once seemed a distant dream.
Chasing 167, TKR got off to a flying start, but Obed McCoy turned the game on its head in his very first over, removing both Alex Hales and Colin Munro.
Hales struggled to get going and fell for 5 off 10, while Munro, in contrast, was in blistering form — smashing 44 off just 18 balls before being dismissed by McCoy.
Once the spinners came, run scoring became difficult. Rahkeem Cornwall dismissed Nicholas Pooran, who made 10 off 14. Shakib Al Hasan removed Darren Bravo for 2. Keacy Carty's knock of 35 off 31 kept TKR in the hunt throughout the game. After his wicket, Kieron Pollard took the onus on himself and nearly took the Knight Riders home.
Pollard was dropped by Imad Wasim off Obed McCoy. He made them pay by taking 22 off the penultimate over bowled by the left-arm pacer.
With 14 needed off the last over, Shamar Springer held his nerves and gave away only 5 runs to seal the deal for the Falcons.
