6:14 PM IST, 1:44 PM Local Time: That’s it. Bangladesh pull off their highest successful run-chase in Women’s T20 World Cups. They chase down 140 with six wickets in hand and with five balls to spare to hand Netherlands their first loss in their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup fixture. The Dutch, though, should be proud of the fight they showed.
Chasing 140, Bangladesh’s openers Juairiya Ferdous and Dilara Akter went unscathed till the end of the powerplay, scoring 47 in it. Ferdous played a scintillating knock and raced to her fifty in just 32 balls. She departed on the very next ball. On the next, Caroline de Lange cleaned up Nigar Sultana (0).
Dilara looked good for her 26 before she was sent back in the 11th over. In the next, Sobhana Mostary (4) got run out. Sharmin Akhter was joined by Shorna Akter and both steadied the ship. Both kept ticking the scoreboard and kept the Dutch side at bay, taking the game deep.
Sharmin and Shorna kept their cool as the game went down the wire. With three required from the final over, Shorna hit a boundary to seal the game for her side. The unbeaten 56-run stand between Sharmin (37*) and Shorna (18*) helped Bangladesh get across the line in 19.1 overs. For Netherlands, Caroline de Lange (2/27) was the pick of the bowlers.
Earlier, Netherlands opted to bat first in their very first Women’s T20 World Cup outing. They scored 40 at the end of the powerplay, losing both their openers in Phebe Molkenboer (11) and Heather Siegers (16) in it. Skipper Babette de Leede at three held the innings nicely but lacked support.
The middle-order batters failed to contribute but de Leede kept going strong and brought up a fine fifty. She fell on 45-ball 50 in the 17th over. A handy unbeaten 23-run stand between Iris Zwilling (13*) and Silver Siegers (10*) at the back end helped Netherlands post 139/8 on the board.
Each of the five Bangladesh’s bowlers entered the wickets column, with Marufa Akter picking up two, conceding 31 runs in her four overs. The batters then contributed and helped them chase down the total in the last over with five balls to spare.
Stay tuned for the post-match presentation.
