BAN-W won by 3 wickets
4:27 PM IST and 4:57 Local Time: Bangladesh Women win by 3 wickets! Phew! Was it supposed to go so close? No, not at all! Credit must go to Sri Lanka for fighting right till the end. However, the moment is all Bangladesh's. They beat their Asian rivals for the first time in WODIs! However, in the back of their minds they would know that they just came out of jail there. They would love to be more clinical from next time around but well they can rejoice a special win for now.

Sri Lanka women won the toss and elected to bat first. Their opening pair of Hasini Perera and Imesha Dulani started off very well as they put 68 runs on the board for the first wicket. However, Bangladesh got two quick wickets and dismissed Perera in that too. From 68/0, the visitors found themselves at 72/2.

Imesha Dulani found good support in Hansima Karunaratne and both batters stitched beautiful 50s. Imesha got to 52(77) and Hansima scored 54(71). Both were dismissed soon after their 50s and the score stood at 160/4. It looked like with that platform, Sri Lanka would stroll past 250.

However, Bangladesh pegged back and made sure the Sri Lankan lower order proved ineffective. Apart from Kavisha Dilhari's 30, no batter stood out in the lower order as the Sri Lankans were restricted to only 205/9 at the end of 50 overs. The pick of the bowlers were Ritu Moni (3/36) and Nahida Akter (2/38).

The chase was not going to be that easy on a wearing surface and Bangladesh needed a couple of big partnerships to get across the line. Their start with the bat was a horrid one as in a span of two overs, they were struggling at 5/2. Both new ball bowlers for Sri Lanka, Malki Madara and Nimasha Madushani took out one opener each.

There was rebuilding before captain Nigar Sultana fell as well and the home side was struggling at 34/3.  The visitors were bossing the game at that moment but then Sharmin Akhter joined hands with Sobhana Mostary. The pair added 87 runs for the fourth wicket. However, the partnership came to an unfortunate end when Mostary started suffering from cramps. She had to walk back for 41(56) Retired Hurt.

Shorna Akter joined Sharmin Akhter and the pair continued the good work. The pair added 78 runs together. They batted with intent and brought the equation down to just 7 to win off 36 balls. That is when absolute chaos broke out. Sharmin was dismissed for 86(126) and Shorna followed her immediately for 35(49).

From 199/3, the home side managed to collapse to 200/7. They lost 4 wickets for just 1 run and effectively they were 200/8 as Sobhana Mostary was out retired hurt. However, Nahida Akter and Sultana Khatun held their nerves to get their team across the line in the penultimate over. The pick of the bowlers for the visitors were Dewmi Vihanga (3/43) and Malki Madara (2/37). Massive moment for the home side all departments should give credit to themselves for this win!
Hasini Perera (Sri Lanka Women Captain): "(On the loss) I think we started well. We played well till 30 overs but we did not finish well.

(On the extreme conditions) The heat is not an excuse. We are used to these conditions in our country as well. We need to go through the mistakes and do better in the next game.

(On the efforts made by the bowlers) Yes, I am really proud of how the bowlers bowled in the last few overs. However, we need to make sure we do not bowl too many extras."
Player of the Match: Sharmin Akhter
Sharmin Akhter (POTM): "It’s good that I contributed, but I’m still disappointed that I couldn’t finish the game. I’ll look to spend more time at the crease in the next match and see it through. (On talk with Sobhana Mostary in the middle) The wicket was good, and we know our strengths—we just motivated each other to play to them."
Nigar Sultana (Bangladesh Women Captain): "(Was she nervous in the last few moments?) No, I was not nervous as we knew we had Sobhana in the hut. Also, Nahida and Sultana did well to complete the match.

(On Sobhana Mostary's injury) Yeah her cramps were trouble, but I think she is doing better now. However, we have a match just in 2 days' time, so we need to be careful with her injury. The credit must go to the bowlers for sure.

(On the bowling performance) The way their batters were batting was superb. I think they had the game in control for the first 36 overs. So, to bounce back from there for our bowlers was a great deal and yeah credit goes to them.

(On the batting performance) Very happy with the batting performance as a whole. After we lost early wickets in the powerplay, I was out there with Sharmin. I told her we need two good partnerships. One big and one small is also fine. Unfortunately I got out. However, Sharmin, Sobhana and the Shorna played really well. In the end though everyone wanted to be a hero and threw their wickets away and we are very disappointed about that but yeah on a whole happy to get the win."
