The grand stage is set, the red ball is shining, and the ultimate bragging rights of Indian domestic red-ball cricket are on the line as East Zone collide with South Zone in the marquee Final of the 63rd Duleep Trophy at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 6th September (Sunday). The stakes couldn't be higher: a star-studded South Zone side, boosted by key international stars, aims to dominate, while a spirited East Zone team looks to make history and cap off a remarkable tournament run.
Historically, this summit clash pits two sides with vastly contrasting pedigree in Duleep Trophy history. South Zone stand as one of the competition's strongest sides, having reached 25 finals and lifted the trophy 14 times (12 outright titles and 2 shared). On the other hand, East Zone have reached the final 7 times in their history, tasting ultimate glory twice. Their maiden final appearance came way back in the 1970–71 season, before they went on to claim back-to-back championship titles in 2011–12 and 2012–13.
For East Zone, reaching the summit clash ends a long 13-year wait to qualify for a Duleep Trophy final for the first time since their victorious 2012–13 campaign. Ishan Kishan's side arrived at the final after two statement victories, first dismantling North East Zone by an innings and 210 runs in the quarter-finals, and then putting on a clutch display to knock out defending champions Central Zone by 4 wickets in a thrilling semi-final shootout.
The semi-final between East Zone and Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence was pure high-stakes drama. Central Zone posted 266 in their first innings, powered by Rinku Singh’s 60 and Aryan Juyal’s 46. East Zone replied with an identical 266, driven by a breathtaking knock from 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (92 off 81 balls) and senior opener Abhimanyu Easwaran’s solid 69. In the second innings, East Zone’s pace attack delivered a knockout blow: Player of the Match Mukesh Kumar bagged 4/44 while Mohammed Shami took 3/56 to dismantle Central Zone for 158. With a target of 159, Sooryavanshi laid the foundation with a fiery 40 before skipper Ishan Kishan held his nerve with an unbeaten 39 to anchor East Zone to 162/6 and seal a historic win.
South Zone booked their spot in the summit clash with a commanding 7-wicket victory over North Zone in the semis. After North Zone were bowled out for 195 in their first innings, thanks to Vidwath Kaverappa’s 4-wicket haul (4/66), South Zone responded with 312. Captain Tilak Varma led from the front with a masterclass 116*, supported by Shreyas Gopal’s crucial 87. North Zone put up a spirited second-innings fightback to score 297, anchored by Sanat Sangwan (76) and Ayush Doseja (52), while M.D. Nidheesh ripped through the tail with a magnificent 5/56. Chasing 181 for victory, South Zone comfortably overhauled the target at 182/3, driven by Ricky Bhui’s quickfire 42, N. Jagadeesan’s 43, and an unbeaten 51 from skipper Tilak Varma alongside R. Smaran (31*).
Statistically, both squads feature the premier performers of the tournament so far. East Zone’s batting relies heavily on the red-hot form of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (140 runs across 2 matches at a staggering 100+ strike rate) and Abhimanyu Easwaran (93 runs in the semi-final), complemented by Shahbaz Ahmed (167 runs & 4 wickets in the quarter-final) and Sudip Kumar Gharami (185 runs in the tournament). Their bowling battery is led by Mukesh Kumar (7 wickets in the semi-final), Mohammed Shami (5 wickets), Abhijit Sarkar (10 wickets overall), and Anukul Roy (7 wickets). For South Zone, Tilak Varma leads their run charts with 167 runs in his lone match, backed by Shreyas Gopal (87 runs). On the bowling front, MD Nidheesh (7 wickets) and Vidwath Kaverappa (5 wickets in the match) have emerged as lethal striking options.
Furthermore, South Zone has received a significant boost for the grand finale with the addition of two key players: star batter Devdutt Padikkal and strike bowler Mohammed Siraj. Padikkal arrives in red-hot form following a remarkable tour of Sri Lanka, where he bagged the Player of the Series award after amassing 328 runs across two Tests, including two brilliant centuries (167 & 117). While reports initially indicated KL Rahul might also join the squad for the final, he is not present with the team, leaving the spotlight firmly on Padikkal and Siraj to elevate South Zone's firepower.
