8:08 PM IST, 3:39 PM Local Time | England make a roaring comeback in the Ashes 2023! Woakes and Wood see England over the line as they defeat Australia by 3 wickets to make the series 2-1! Another titanic tussle between the two esteemed Test nations has provided us with solid entertainment over the last 4 days!
England won the toss and elected to bowl first in this Test, and their decision has been validated today! Australia's first innings began with a disaster as the baggy greens lost their entire top order with just 85 runs on the board.
However, the returning Mitch Marsh stepped up, the tall Aussie all-rounder smashed a scintillating 118 runs off 118 balls and forged a strong partnership with Travis Head to help Australia to a total of 263/10 at the end of their innings. English pacers looked on song and Mark Wood was the pick of the season, as the pacer bamboozled Australia to pick up 5/73 from just 17 overs to restrict the Aussie batting lineup.
England's reply matched Australia's batting woes. The home side were reduced to 87/5 and needed another miracle innings from skipper Stokes to close down the Aussie lead as much as possible. The southpaw scored 80 runs off 108 balls and thanks to cameos from Mark Wood and Moeen Ali, England managed to put up a total of 237/10, leaving a slender lead of 27 runs for the Aussies to carry into their second innings.
And believe it or not, all of this happened within the first one and a half days of this test match. Just a testament to the pace at which things were progressing. Australia resumed their innings before Tea on Day 2 and Broad dismissed Warner for a solitary run, picking up his wicket in both innings of this test match and 17th time in his test career.
Marnus and Khawaja responded to the early loss of Warner with a solid 57 run-stand before England opened the flood gates. Australia lost 3 more wickets in a flurry before Head and Marsh played out the remaining overs of Day 2.
Day 3 was when the rain gods decided to have a break in play and it was not until the third session of the day that we saw some action. The conditions were overcast and the England pacers began their all-out attack once again. As Travis Head held up one end for Australia, carving a crucial 77 runs off 112 deliveries, the other end saw wickets falling all around him. Eventually, England knocked over Australia for 224/10, setting a target of 251 runs for them.
The English openers played out a tricky 24 minutes of Day 3 to close the play on 27/0 and needing 224 runs from two days to stop Australia from retaining the Ashes.
Day 4 came around and even with the overcast conditions, the Aussie pacers found it difficult to get any swing. It was only due to Ben Duckett's mistake that Australia got the first breakthrough of the morning. Moeen Ali came in at No. 3 and the umpires decided that a change of ball was needed.
The changed ball bought about vigour for Aussies as they soon picked up the wickets of Crawley and Ali to put England in a precarious position at 93/3. Root and Brook stood their ground and took England past 100 runs but Australia kept clawing their way back as they dismisses Root 15 minutes before lunch.
It was Stokesy time as the English skipper and Brook saw out the morning session with some quick fire runs and the scoreboard reading, England - 153/4, need 98 runs to win. Australia came roaring back after Lunch, they quickly removed Stokes and Bairstow to give themselves hope but Brook and Woakes had other ideas as the duo stitched together a match winning partnership of 59 runs to bring England within 21 runs of victory.
Brook unfortunately could not finish off the match, but it did not matter as Mark 'Woo-Hoo' Wood and Chris Woakes stood together and helped England over the line! In the end it was England's day at Headingley and they will set their sights on Manchester to level this series to set up a fantastic finale Test in London!
