Joe Root (Player of the Match): (On he likes winning games than scoring hundreds?) Absolutely. That's what the game is about. 1-1 in the series, going into Lord's. On that pitch, it was important to be there and get the job done. It's probably the best feeling you can get.
(Has he ever been stranded on 99 before?) I have got out on 99 few times before but it doesn't matter. You play to win games. This series is very much alive. It is what we intended to play before today. We are looking forward to a big game at Lord's.
(On the conditions) Yeah, throughout the whole game the conditions got difficult to bat. Once they got that partnership, our bowlers stepped up brilliantly and restricted them to that score. We soaked a bit of pressure in different phases of the game. I thought we did a great job as a whole. Sometimes you need ugly wins. Now, we go to Lord's with everything to play for.
(Why is winning so difficult for the ODI team than the T20I team?) Well, you can look at the last 30 games and also here and now. I think this team should be judged here and now. We won in Sri Lanka. The first team to win there in 4 years. We lost the game over there too and learnt our lessons. And that's exactly what we did again today. The challenge is, can we do it at Lord's when the pressure's on against a brilliant team. They are the Number 1 ranked team in the world. For us to stand up and play like that, I think, shows where we are and is a good benchmark for us. So, let's back it up again at Lord's and then I think there is a very different look or perception to where this team is. I think it's in a different place to where some might think it is."

Shubman Gill (India Captain): [on their total] "Quite disappointing. We thought 300-310 would be a good total. After 25 overs we were at a good position but we lost too many wickets in the middle.
[on the collapses] Our tailenders are not the best batsmen but we expected a bit more from our lower middle order and we were not able to capitalize on the start that we got. But hopefully the next time we get there we'll try to build some partnerships and take it on from there.
[on his own dismissal] Never a good feeling when you ping one straight to covers.
[on missing Sundar] He's a key part of our team. I think he got injured while he was batting, taking that run to mid off and maybe it would have played a part, squeezing in the pressure. We had to bowl our main bowlers throughout the inning but I don't think it would have made a really big difference because the ball was doing for the fast bowlers but you lose a key player like that, you have to change your strategies. There was a bit of momentum lost for us.
[on Root] 240 we always knew the run rate. If we would have had the run rate close to 5.5 or 6, we could have produced a false shot out of him but 4.5 per over, he's a master of these kind of totals. We just couldn't produce any false shot out of him."

(On restricting India to 233) I thought it was a phenomenal effort. From 180/3 after 30 overs and looking like they would get a big total. We had a good couple of periods when Sam (Curran) and Jacksy bowled together. To bowl them out for 7 for 60 in the end was just ridiculous.
(On playing an extra seamer today) It was all down to the conditions, really. We selected our XI based on the conditions. Today we thought that the extra seamer was the right option. On another day, we could bring in an extra spinner.
(On Joe Root unbeaten on 99) He is a phenomenal player. You can learn so much from him in the change room. He is a great bloke to have around. He always seems to turn up when we need him the most.
