England Women

3/14
9:29 PM IST, 4:59 PM Local Time: England take the home T20I series 2-1 with a thumping 7-wicket win over New Zealand, knocking down the 81-run target in just 13.5 overs at Hove after a fantastic performance with the ball had sent NZ packing for 80 in the first innings.

Amelia Kerr called it right at the toss and elected to bat first making two changes in the lineup, bringing Suzie Bates to open the innings who could only add 3. The batting order collapsed and it was Jess Kerr's 20, Isabella Gaze's 17 and Maddy Green's 14 - the only batters to score into double digits - that took NZ to their total. Danielle Gibson produced her career-best 3/14, Charlie Dean picked up 3/13, Linsey Smith was fantastic again with 2/15, Sophie Ecclestone on her comeback picking up 1/11 and Isabelle Wong 1/20 respectively.

Nensi Patel got an early breakthrough for NZ trapping Alice Capsey in front of the stumps in the 3rd over. Replays confirmed Capsey would have survived had she taken the referral. Sophia Dunkley and Maia Bouchier added 25 runs for the 2nd wicket before Bree Illing sent Dunkley back in the hut for 22, just one ball before the end of the powerplay with England 36/2.

Bouchier was joined by former skipper Heather Knight who smashed a couple of boundaries to provide some more impetus to the English chase before Amelia Kerr had her caught at backward point as Knight attempted a reverse sweep. Freya Kemp scored 7 off 5 and remained unbeaten with Bouchier (19* off 29) as England chased the total down in the 14th over.

Bree Illing, Amelia Kerr and Nensi Patel picked up a wicket apiece but a dismal batting performance from the Kiwis didn't put a defendable total on the board. Stay tuned as we continue our post match and post series coverage.

Danielle Gibson (Player of the Match): "[How does that feel?] Great. Obviously, been a bit time out of the game. Good to get back in the team and make an impact.

[On getting a chance to contribute in all facets of the game] Yes. I want to be that all-rounder who can make an impact in all facets of the game.

[What was the plan while bowling today?] Just tried to hit the hard length and tried some cutters. All the bowlers did a fine job."
Player of the Series: Linsey Smith
Linsey Smith (Player of the Series): [on her key to success] "Just backing my strengths has worked for me throughout the series. Being really clinical in that powerplay. Try not to leave the stumps too much and apply a lot of pressure.

[on new ball to old ball] Early on I get a bit of shape Not too much turn but I try to target the stumps. Towards the back end, they're looking for a lot more boundaries so just try not to be predictable and get a few variations out.

[on her low release] I am working on it since the last couple of months with the spin coach. It's nice to feel confident to try it in a game but happy it came out today.

[on her fielding] It's something we talk about a lot as a squad and it's really important especially in T20s. We are just controlling our impulse and our energy and really trusting each other and yeah overall we've had a really impressive series in the field so hopefully that goes on."
Amelia Kerr (New Zealand Women Captain): "[On the loss today] Yeah. It's a disappointing finish to the series. Throughout the series, we played good cricket but today, it was disappointing. But I feel it was better to do it today than in the World Cup.

[On losing wickets in clusters in this series] Losing wickets early and losing wickets in clumps. You want to set the tone and get off to a good start. We bat deep and it's exciting. But we have to give ourselves a chance to bat well in the powerplay.

[On the positives to take from this series] There are lots of positives. We have been good in the field throughout this series. Nensi and Bree bowled really well. Sophie and Maddy with the bat as well. In the World Cup, you want different players firing and not be depended on one.

[On the warm-up games before the World Cup] We have got a couple of warm-up games. That will be good. Try and improve on what we can learn from this series."
Charlie Dean (England Women Captain): [on the captaincy role] "That was a brilliant win from the girls today. Definitely made my job easier when we pick up early wickets. I guess we learnt from that Canterbury game when we're on top and really trying to be ruthless and we were today.

[on missing Lauren Bell today] A bit of a loss for us today but for the girls to stand up and we had a different formula in the powerplay today and had it brilliant. Credit to the squad and the girls. They are more than ready when they get the chance.

[on the importance of allrounders in the WC] Seam bowling allrounders bring so much with the ball and bat. To have that in our squad, it really bounces our team. It makes it easier as we get in. The girls are really chuffed to be contributing.

[on the fielding] It's been brilliant to really up our energy. T20 cricket is a dynamic, high energy game so it's a bit easier to bring that and we try to make real purpose with our fielding and to convert like that and with the chances and run outs and bits like that has been really good."
Charlie Dean collects the trophy. She joins her teammates as they pose for the photographs. England Women seal the T20I series by a 2-1 margin.
That's it from our coverage of the 3-match WT20I series between England and New Zealand. Hosts England prepare well for the upcoming home T20 World Cup defeating the defending champions 2-1 in a well contested series. Another challenge awaits as the Indian side brings a different sort of challenge at the end of this week in their final series before the T20 World Cup.
