2:54 AM IST, 10:24 PM local time: Hampshire Hawks continue to soar high. They thump Sussex Sharks by 29 runs to register their 4th win in the tournament and thereby extend their reign at the top of the South Group points table. Meanwhile, Tymal Mills and co. find themselves at the other end. What's more? Their net run rate has taken another beating tonight.
Though, this is by no means the end of the road. And in sport, just like in life, it isn't always about where you start, but about how you finish. Take tonight for example. It started off as a damp squib. It was raining and hence, the start of play was delayed. Inclement weather even prevented the stands from being full. However, those who made it to the venue, witnessed some entertaining cricket and an emphatic victory for the home side at the end.
Hampshire's start was not ideal by any means either. They were reeling a 39/3 at the end of the powerplay. But then, a pugnacious half-century from Liam Dawson, an impressive 23-ball-32 from Tristan Stubbs and two effervescent cameos towards the end from Hilton Cartwright and James Fuller propelled them to 173/6 in 20 overs.
The second innings followed the exact opposite script. Sussex Sharks were off to a flyer. They scored 67 runs in the powerplay and only lost Harrison Ward's wicket off the last ball of the 6th over. It was a slower ball that Fuller delivered after taking some advice from Dawson. And thus, the story flipped. The visitors went from 67/0 to 122/9 over a 10-overs period. Liam Dawson was once again the show-stopper. He picked 3/20 off his 4 overs. With sprightly knocks of 16* (11) and 16 (7) respectively, Danny Lamb and Henry Crocombe did ignite the flame of hope towards the end, but they were always fighting a lost battle.
Chris Wood, James Fuller and Manny Lumsden ended with two wickets each. For Sussex only Tymal Mills had taken multiple wickets. Also, in his 50th T20, Tom Prest injured his finger towards the fag end in attempting a catch. Hopefully, he will recover in time and be in action soon.
