5 PM IST, 11 PM Local Time: Mitchell Owen, the Player of the Final last year, wins it for Hobart Hurricanes. He holds his nerves as he defends five on the final ball to help his side stay alive in the competition. Heart-break for Melbourne Stars as they fall short by three runs in a thrilling game at the Bellerive Oval. As a result, they get knocked out of Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26. All smiles in the Hurricanes' camp though as they will now fly to Sydney to face Sydney Sixers in the Challenger on Friday.
Let's have a recap of the Knockout. After a delay of more than 90 minutes, the action began and the game was reduced to 10-overs per side. The Stars opted to bowl first and Glenn Maxwell dismissed Mitchell Owen (7) in the very first over. Tim Ward scored a run-a-ball 10 before falling in the fourth over.
The Stars bowled beautifully in the middle phase as Beau Webster and Ben McDermott struggled a bit to find the fence. Mitchell Swepson bowled brilliantly, conceding 12 singles in his two overs. McDermott departed on 12 in the sixth over. Nikhil Chaudhary at five played a fine cameo of 11-ball 24 at the back end of the innings.
Webster teed off in the final over against Tom Curran. He hit some lusty blows before holing out in the deep on 26-ball 47. 21 runs were scored in the final over and the Hurricanes finished their innings on 114/5. Haris Rauf (2/27) picked up two wickets for the Stars.
Chasing 115, the Stars were dented early as Riley Meredith cleaned up Thomas Rogers (4) on the first ball of the second over. Rain arrived after that over and the action resumed after a short delay. The chase was reduced to 7 overs and the revised target for the Stars was 85.
Sam Harper and Joe Clarke scored 11 and 13 runs in the third and fourth over respectively to keep their side in the hunt. Clarke scored 31 off 17 before holing out in the deep in the fifth over. The Stars required 37 runs from 2 overs. In the sixth over, Sam Harper was retired out on six-ball 10.

In walked Hilton Cartwright and he hit 4, 4 and 6 to bring the equation down 5 from 1. Owen held his nerves as he nailed the wide yorker which Cartwright failed to put away. Just a single on the final ball meant that the Stars fell agonizingly short by three runs to bow out of the competition. Ben McDermott (Hobart Hurricanes Captain): "The heart rate was definitely going up in that last over. Chris Jordan had a little niggle on his calf and I think he strained it a little bit more running between the wickets at the end.
Hopefully, he pulls up alright for the next game. It was good to get the game in and a nice result for us in the end. I'm pretty sure that Nathan will be okay for Sydney."

Beau Webster (Player of the Match): "Yeah, few heart stopping moments there, especially in the last five minutes. You never know obviously with that dangerous Stars side. They have immense power in their squad. They were incredible this season but once again felt short. I am very happy with the boys who put up a great show in this rain interrupted fixture. We probably thought that we won't play too much. First it was 10 overs, then 7. It was a bit chaotic but we will take the win.
Yeah, it's always very difficult to bat here especially if it rains. We wanted to set a good target but we didn't knew what would be a good score in this 10-over game. After looking at their XI, I thought we needed a few more runs. Little bit scratchy knock from me in the middle but I got going in the end.
Yeah, next level mentality to be honest. Obviously Billy didn't play a lot this year but he is a class player, we have seen what he can do with the ball. He steps in and does a great job. Obviously CJ (Jordan) is battling a little bit of ankle there. Whoever comes in feels like can do the job for the side. We have a really good depth in our side.

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars Captain): "Look, it’s always tough to end the season like that. But at the end of the day, they played good cricket and it was always going to be one of those games. I’m glad it came down to the wire, it deserved to. So it is what it is, really.

Harper was clear about that as well. We actually didn’t even have to talk about it, it was pretty simple with that long left in the game. I think it was only 12 balls at that stage, so that was pretty straightforward.
It’s one that we’re going to reflect on. Just to think that we were so close to the top two, and then to end up travelling for the final and then obviously this rain-affected game. But it is what it is, both teams played in it and they played well.
