10:03 PM IST, Local Time | A comprehensive victory for India today sees them seal the 3 match ODI series 2-0 with an ODI to spare! They defeat a hapless Australia side by 99 runs (DLS method) to win this rain-curtailed encounter!
Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first, and after a couple of boundaries in the first 4 balls, Josh Hazlewood managed to remove Ruturaj Gaikwad and give Australia the start they needed. However, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill had other ideas. The duo went onto stitch together a monster 200 run-stand with both batters going onto smash centuries.
While Shreyas Iyer got going from the start, Shubman Gill bided his time before exploding and by the time Shreyas Iyer eventually fell for the score of 105 runs from 90 balls, the scoreboard read 216/2 after 30.5 overs. Shubman Gill soon followed suit as the Aussies dismissed The Prince in the 35th over with his scorecard at 104 runs from 97 balls.
The Aussies thought they could come back in the game but the Indians were not done yet. Skipper KL Rahul played a Klassy knock to score 52 runs off 38 balls and he was well supported by Ishan Kishan with a cameo of 31 runs from 18 balls. But the backend of the innings belonged to India's very own Mr. 360 i.e., Suryakumar Yadav.
The batter from Mumbai played a blinder of a knock to score 72 runs from just 37 balls to help India reach a total of 399/5 from their 50 overs. A record-breaking innings from India saw them register their highest total against Australia in ODIs.
Come the chase, it was a daunting task for the Aussies with a monster target of 400 up ahead for them and things only turned worse as Prasidh Krishna on his comeback dismissed Short and Smith off consecutive deliveries in the second over to put the men in Yellow on the backfoot.
David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stabilized the innings and were going well until the rain decided to interrupt and stop proceedings for an hour. Post the rain break, the target was revised to 317 from 33 overs via the DLS method.
The highlight of the chase was David Warner's right handed batting to counter the threat of Ravichandran Ashwin but soon after scoring his half-century the southpaw fell and thus began the Aussie collapse. Wickets started tumbling one after the other as the duo of Ashwin-Jadeja rolled back the years to bamboozle the Aussie batters.
Ashwin and Jadeja's exploits left the Aussies reeling at 140/8 in the 21st over and staring down a even bigger margin of defeat, but Abbott and Hazelwood's explosive partnership coupled with India's poor fielding at the end only delayed the inevitable.
The run-rate was always high for the Aussies to have any real chance after the collapse they had. Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for India with his figures of 3/41 from 7 overs while Jaddu also picked up 3/42 and Krishna chipped in with a couple of wickets.
A confidence damaging defeat for Australia and they will be disappointed with the way things turned out today. India have sealed the series victory but they will still want to whitewash the Aussies ahead of the World Cup!
