1:58 AM IST, 9:28 PM Local Time: Thatβs it. England clinch the T20I series after a convincing win in the decider. They beat India by 6 wickets to claim the series 2-1. It was a sensational performance from them tonight and this win will boost their confidence heading into the T20 World Cup at home. India, meanwhile, have a lot of questions to answer.
Chasing, 181, England lost their top three inside the powerplay. Sophia Dunkley (16), Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (5) and Amy Jones (2) were sent packing cheaply. Alice Capsey at four played aggressively and kept scoring at a brisk rate. She received good support from Heather Knight as the hosts were well-placed at 97/3 at the halfway mark of their innings.
Capsey brought up her fifty in just 27 balls. Knight too raced to her fifty in 31 balls as the stand grew past the triple-figure mark. The Indian bowlers looked clueless on the field. Finally, they managed to break the 137-run stand as Capsey fell after her career-best knock of 43-ball 82.
Knight (70* off 42) and Freya Kemp (2* off 2) provided the finishing touches to the chase as England got across the line in 18.3 overs with six wickets in hand. For the visitors, Arundhati Reddy (2/31) and Kranti Gaud (2/40) picked up two wickets each but they failed to defend the total.
After being asked to bat first, India lost both their openers Shafali Verma (11) and Smriti Mandhana (8) inside the powerplay. Yastika Bhatia at three scored a quickfire 18-ball 32 before getting run out. Jemimah Rodrigues along with her skipper Harmanpreet Kaur stitched a good 40-run stand before the former fell on 29.
Deepti Sharma and Harmanpreet kept the English side at bay with a solid 67-run stand for the fifth wicket. Deepti scored 32 before departing in the 19th over. Harmanpreet raced past her fifty and remained unbeaten on 56 off 40 along with Richa Ghosh (6*) as India finished their innings on 180/5.
For England, Lauren Bell picked up two wickets, giving away 36 runs in her four overs. In the chase, the 137-run stand between Capsey and Knight proved to be the match-winning one as England wrapped up the series with a 2-1 margin with a six-wicket win in the decider.
Stay tuned for the post-series presentation.
