1:36 PM IST, 6:36 PM local time: Sydney Sixers win by 6 wickets.
In cricket, much like in life, sometimes it isn't the methodology used, but the result what actually matters. On a tacky wicket, both innings played out in contrasting styles. Being put into bat, Renegades went hammers and tongs upfront. Josh Brown launched a blitzkrieg, slamming a 19-ball-43 to get them up and running.
However, Sixers pulled it back in the middle. Some hard lengths and a bunch of off-pace deliveries came in handy as they put the squeeze on. As a result, despite being 54/2 in 5 overs and scoring at over 10 rpo, Renegades could only manage 164/9 in 20. Apart from Brown, Jake Fraser-McGrurk and Hassan Khan made notable contributions, but not quite at an enviable strike-rate.
Sean Abbott starred with the ball, picking 3/16, while Jack Edwards, Ben Dwarshuis and Hayden Kerr picked 2 wickets each.
The run chase bagan in a sedate manner. While Daniel Hughes took some time before launching some big hits, Babar Azam was happy to hold one end up — till the 12th over, he had only scored one boundary, that too off the outside edge of the bat.
When wickets started falling, it appeared as if the visitors were getting themselves into a hole. The turning point came in the 13th over, when Sixers opted for the Power Surge and Babar hit mode turbo. He hit two four and a six in that over and there was no looking back.
An effervescent cameo from Joel Davies further sealed the deal. The southpaw came out all guns blazing as he notched up a 15-ball-34* to take them over the line. Gurinder Sandhu, with his 2/23, was the pick of the Renegades bowlers.
