1:31 AM IST, 9:01 PM Local time: The Oval Invincibles have registered themselves into the finals of the men's Hundred competition with a thumping 5-wicket win over the Trent Rockets at the Oval.
Skipper Sam Billings was the star of the show as the Invincibles lost wickets in quick succession to get under pressure chasing a total of 149 which was put up by the Rockets with some help from the pair of Colin Munro and Lewis Gregory in the first innings.
Chasing the easy looking total, Jason Roy had majority of strike scoring 19 off the initial 21 runs but he picked up Joe Root at deep midwicket playing a sweetly timed lofted stroke to be the first man out to Luke Wood.
Daniel Sams introduced next picked up Tawanda Muyeye and Sam Curran off consecutive deliveries to bring up the team hattrick as the hosts went down to 21/3 from 21/0 in the space of 3 balls.
Will Jacks and Sam Billings then added 73 runs in 40 balls with Jacks hitting 31 in 22 with 3 massive sixes and a boundary. Jimmy Neesham playing the first match of the season couldn't do much with the bat and was out to Matthew Carter for 4.
Sam Billings continued playing the aggressive and calculative brand of cricket going past his 50 in just 27 balls. Tom Curran at number 7 fired in from the other end in his unbeaten score of 18 in 10 balls which involved three fours.
With 5 required in 10 balls, Billings smashed a four and then a six to take his team to victory with 8 balls to spare. He finished his unbeaten knock at 76 in just 40 balls hitting five fours and as many sixes all over the park.
Daniel Sams (2/38) started out well but was taken to the cleaners along with the other bowlers later in the innings. Luke Wood (1/20), Carter (1/21) and Sam Cook (1/22) saw success with the ball but their effort wasn't enough to contain the total.
Oval Invincibles with this thumping win now have 13 points with six wins and have qualified for the final to be played on Sunday at Lord's.
