9:44 PM IST & 5:14 PM Local Time: Phew! What a chase this has been from the London Spirit Women. Absolute silence at the Kennington Oval as the hosts suffer a crushing defeat in their final outing of the season. The Spirit Women cruise home by 8 wickets with 38 balls to spare.
Earlier in the day, Charlie Dean won the toss and put Oval Invincibles Women into bat. The surface looked good but had a touch of slowness in it. The Invincibles began cautiously as the Spirit Women bowled with discipline in the powerplay. The breakthrough came when skipper Dean dismissed Meg Lanning for 19, followed shortly by Paige Scholfield who also fell for 19. Alice Capsey’s poor run with the bat continued as she managed just 11 before departing, leaving the Invincibles under pressure early on.
Marizanne Kapp struggled to find any rhythm in the middle and received little support from her teammates. Lauren Winfield-Hill tried a reverse sweep but was caught at short third man for just 3, while the lower order could only manage single-digit scores. Kapp stood tall with a fighting 32 off 25 balls, guiding her side past the 100-run mark. Oval Invincibles eventually closed their innings at 108/8. Eva Gray (2/12) and skipper Charlie Dean (2/12) were the standout bowlers for the Spirit.
In reply, the London Spirit Women got off to a flying start as openers Georgia Redmayne and Kira Meghan Chathli made the most of the powerplay, dispatching the loose deliveries with ease. Chathli set the tone early before Redmayne joined in, and together they kept the scoreboard ticking without giving the Invincibles any opening.
With their qualification hopes riding on a quick chase to boost NRR, the Spirit delivered in style. The duo added a commanding 106-run stand before Redmayne fell for 42 off 30, caught at mid-off, and Chathli followed soon after for the same score, both wickets falling in Phoebe Franklin’s first set. Charli Knott then applied the finishing touch, striking the winning runs as London Spirit Women wrapped up a thumping 8-wicket win with 38 balls to spare.
