9:40 PM IST, 5:10 PM Local Time: That’s it. Oval Invincibles Women carry forward the winning momentum and make it two wins in a row. They beat Welsh Fire Women comprehensively by 39 runs to register their first win at home this season. The Fire Women continue to struggle as they suffer their fourth straight loss, remaining winless in this year’s competition.
Chasing 151, Sophia Dunkley and Hayley Matthews gave the Fire Women a solid start before the latter fell on 12 on the penultimate ball of the powerplay to Amanda-Jade Wellington. Dunkley kept scoring at a brisk rate but lacked support as Marizanne Kapp dismissed skipper Tammy Beaumont (5) and Georgia Elwiss (0) on consecutive balls.
Jess Jonassen (4) and Sarah Bryce (2) departed cheaply as the Invincibles Women tightened the screws. Dunkley kept fighting hard scored 56 before holing out in the deep. It was too much to do for the lower-order batters as the Fire Women got bundled out on 111 to lose the game by 39 runs. Each of the six Invincibles’ bowlers, barring Rachel Slater, entered the wickets column, with Sophia Smale (3/13) finishing with three to her name.
Earlier, the Invincibles Women batted first and got off to a flying start, despite losing their skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill (0) on the very first ball of the match. Meg Lanning and Alice Capsey motored along nicely and put 45 for the second wicket before the former fell on 23. Capsey kept going strong and was well-supported by Marizanne Kapp.
Capsey notched up a wonderful fifty before getting dismissed on 34-ball 55. Paige Scholfield (5) fell cheaply but Amanda-Jade Wellington (17) played a fantastic cameo to give the impetus to the innings. Kapp remained unbeaten on 47 to power her side to 150/5. Shabnim Ismail (2/31) and Hayley Matthews (2/18) grabbed two scalps apiece for Welsh Fire before their batters faltered in the chase and fell short by 39 runs.
