4:55 PM IST | An excellent comeback from New Zealand after being reduced to just 15/3 inside the powerplay to win the match by a huge margin of 65 runs! This is the first time that the Kiwis have bundled out the oppositions in consecutive matches in the World Cup, and this is their biggest win in terms of runs against Sri Lanka!
New Zealand won the toss earlier in the game and opted to bat first. The decision looked like backfired for Kane Williamson and his men at one stage. Finn Allen (1 off 3), Devon Conway (1 off 4), and Kane Williamson (8 off 13) were out inside the powerplay as the Blackcaps were reduced to 15/3.
Then, it was Glenn Phillips who single-handedly took charge of the Lankan bowlers. Dary Mitchell (22 off 24) played patiently and supported Phillips in this reconstruction, stitching a partnership of 84 runs for the fourth wicket. Phillips (104 off 64) made full use of the dropped opportunities and smashed a swashbuckling century.
While James Neesham (5 off 8) failed to give the finishing touches, Mitchell Santner (11* off 5) struck a few good shots helping the side reach a respectable total in their allotted 20 overs as they posted 167/7.
For Sri Lanka, Kasun Rajitha (4-0-23-2) scalped a couple of wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana (4-0-35-1), Dhananjaya de Silva (2-0-14-1), Lahiru Kumara (3-0-37-1), and Wanindu Hasarnga (4-0-22-1) picked a wicket each.
Coming into the chase, Sri Lanka were nowhere in it as Tim Southee and Trent Boult ran through the Sri Lankan top order to reduce them to 8/4 inside the field restrictions. While Pathum Nissanka (0 off 5) was trapped infront of the stumps by Southee, Boult got rid of Kusal Mendis (4 off 3), Dhanajaya de Silva (0 off 3), and Charith Asalanka (4 off 8).
The new number 6, Chamika Karunaratne (3 off 8), struggled in his short stay as Mitchell Santner had his number straight after the powerplay. On the other end, Bhanuka Rajapaksa tried to counter-attack and got support from his skipper Dasun Shanaka as they added 34 runs for the sixth wicket.
Once Rajapaksa (34 off 22) departed to Lockie Ferguson in the 10th over, Sri Lanka collapsed in the match for the second time. Shanaka was the 9th man to get out as he tried his best to reduce the losing margin as less as possible. Before becoming the fourth scalp of Boult, Shanaka (35 off 32) added 28 runs for the 9th wicket alongside Kasun Rajitha (8* off 21). Lahiru Kumara (4 off 5) was the last wicket to go down for Sri Lanka as he was stumped in the second delivery of the 20th over. Sri Lanka were skittled out for a mere 102 in the chase of 168.

Glenn Phillips (Player of the Match - 104 of 64 balls): "Cheers thanks!! We wanted to be as positive as possible. On a pitch like that, it was difficult to hit the slower ones. I think at the end of the day, we were slightly at par over the level.
Yeah, always smiling, it was good to get over the thing. The way the bowlers bowled, the fielders caught, it was an overall effort. Yeah, while catching [on the cramp] it happened, but at the end, the boys were superb, and the effort was well. I tried to stick to my process, was more happier that I could stick to my process.
The slower ones that were being bowled were popping and hopping, it was difficult to time those. The boys were exceptional today in bowling and fielding and they need to be credited for that."

We dropped a few catches in the fielding. Also, Trent Boult and Southee upfront bowled very well. See there is a way to chase down big totals, we never got settled and lost wickets at regular intervals. We lost five wickets in eight games. Ahhh! see, if we can get two wins, we have a chance for qualification."
Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): "Yeah, it was interesting. We were surprised by the behaviour of the surface. It wasn't what we predicted. Bit of tennis ball bounce on offer, and a few cutters worked as well. Maybe a two-paced track. It was a good attack from Sri Lanka in the powerplay, and to be honest, Glenn Phillips brought the game back towards us with a magnificent knock. He and Mitchell added a big partnership which was the key to this win. It was important to hit the lengths, and our new ball bowlers bowled the same as well. Those lengths are a challenge to hit, and it played to our hands. Overall a great game. Happy with the performance, and now onto the next one."
That is the end of the day from the ICC World Cup 2022. New Zealand, with a comprehensive win and added two more important points to their kitty as they strengthened their pole position in the group. On the other hand, Sri Lanka could only sit and think about where did it go wrong- maybe Pathum Nissanka dropping Glenn Phillips.
