England were up against the hosts New Zealand in the 19th fixture of the ICC Women's World Cup. England won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first.
New Zealand had a good start to the innings as their openers in Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine put up a 61 runs partnership for the first wicket. Kate Cross broke the partnership in the 12th over as she sent Bates back to the pavilion on the score of 22.
Amelia Kerr was the next in line and had a short 35 run partnership alongside the skipper but it went all downhill from there for the hosts as they started to lose wickets at regular interval, the team will also curse their luck as skipper Sophie Devine had to be taken off the field at the end of the innings due to injury.
None of the other players could build a partnership and the side collapsed in the 49th overs with a total of 203 runs on the board. Green remained unbeaten for her side with a crucial knock of 52 runs off 75 deliveries. Kate Cross has the top bowler in the first innings with three wickets to her name for 35 runs.
England struggled with their start during the chase as they lost the wicket of Nicole Wyatt at the score of 17 in the third over. Nicole was looking good from the start but handed an easy catch to walk back to the pavilion with just 12 runs to her name.
Tammy Beaumont and skipper Heather Knight built up a small 36 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket, but New Zealand found their way in as Beaumont was sent back at with England down to two wickets at the score of 97.
Natalie Sciver alongside Knight helped the team quickly recover from the blows and put them on the front seat in the match, Heather departed at the score of 42, giving New Zealand an opportunity to make a comeback into the game. Amy Jones had no contribution to the chase as the batter lost her wicket soon after Knights dismissal giving New Zealand some hopes to stay alive in the contest.
However, Sophia Dunkley alongside Sciver pulled the game back in the favor of the defending champions with a 70 runs partnership for the 5th wicket. New Zealand tried to make a comeback into the game as Mackay ratted her stumps away but it was perhaps a little too late for the hosts as they just had twenty six runs left to defend.
Jessica Kerr gave her side a ray of hope in the death overs as she sent the set batter Sciver back to the dugout at the score of 61. Nat Sciver | Player of the Match: "I didn't realize how much it was raining until I got off the pitch. The conversation is about partnerships and one of us staying at the crease and take the team home. Anya Shrubsole did well finishing the game. It's very tense watching such games from the bench and a bit easier in the middle. I am still shocked after the win. Usually I'd be more nervous but I knew I had to do most of the scoring but we lost few wickets and the pressure was back on us. It was tough bowling in the windy conditions."
Sophie Devine New Zealand Losing Captain: "Look, I always wanted to be out there. I am incredibly proud of my girls to take it deep. We were 40-50 runs short, but the way our bowlers bowled well but yes, they are gutted, but that's cricket. Look, hard question, we have lost a few close ones, had we won those, things would have been different. We could have done a lot of things differently, but we didn't at all. We will come out in our final game and give our best in the final game. It's been a family being with this group, sad that we will not play together again later on. We will enjoy ourselves in a couple of days and then hope we win against Pakistan. I think Lea has some hamstring issues and it flared up today. I am maybe getting older and had issues with my back. So, hopefully, these two days will help both of us recover and play in the final game against Pakistan. We are looking forward to that game. "
Heather Knight | Winning Captain: "All credits to New Zealand, they gave their all. We have been on the wrong side of the results for the last few games so this was a hard fought win. One of us in the top order had to clearly go in with the mindset to finish the job. Dean is an attacking player and has a knack for picking wickets, it's nice to see her fit in so well. We will surely reflect on the win and see where we could have done better. We haven't quite played our best cricket yet, but we have two very important fixtures coming up, so let's see!"
