5 PM IST and 7:30 PM Local Time: OMG! This is the best possible or suitable abbreviation for what just happened at the Optus Stadium! Oliver Peake, the 19-year-old sensation from Victoria, is here to stay for a long, long time! Australian cricketing future is nothing but secured! What a game, what a finish!
On a tricky surface, under immense pressure and amidst the chaos from the Perth crowd, this little boy from Geelong named Oliver Peake nailed the performance for ages! Needing 10 off the last over, needing 4 off the last ball, Peake just delivered one of the best finishes in the BBL.
Earlier in the game, Melbourne Renegades won the bat flip and opted to bowl first. Perth Scorchers were bundled out for 127 in 19.2 overs. Gurinder Sandhu was the star of the show as the Gades' seamer picked up 4/28. Hassan Khan was brilliant and ended with 2/26. A wicket each for Jason Behrendorff and Will Sutherland to cap off a superb performance with the ball.
The Scorchers lost returning Finn Allen cheaply. They then lost the next big thing in Australian cricket, Cooper Connolly, early. Mitchell Marsh got a start and scored 27 off 25 balls, but failed to go big again. Aaron Hardie held an end up and top-scored with his 40-ball 44, but got very little support from the rest of the batting unit as they lost wickets like ninepins and lost their way completely.
Josh Brown set the run chase on fire, scoring 18 runs off the second over delivered by Jhye Richardson. He raced to 22 off 14 balls after being involved in another maiden first over. Joel Paris had his man inside the powerplay, but couldn't continue after his 2-1-7-1 due to a groin injury, which hurt the hosts badly towards the end.
Tim Seifert and Mohammad Rizwan struggled during their stay in the middle, but got off to a start. Jake Fraser-McGurk failed again. Hassan Khan couldn't contribute with the bat as the Scorchers tried to make a match out of it by picking up wickets at regular intervals.
Peake batted smartly with the required run rate being within control. Will Sutherland supported him with an 18-ball 15. Things could have been messy for the visitors had Ashton Turner's stunning catch at mid on not been deemed illegal, with him having no control over the proceedings, giving a big life for Peake that shook the stadium in controversy. As per the rules, it was a perfect decision from the TV umpire, Stephen Dionysius.
The two batters took the game deep, but the Renegades lost their skipper in the penultimate over as Sutherland tried to go for back-to-back big shots. But Peake remained calm under pressure and remained unbeaten with his match-winning contribution of 42 from 30 balls.
Paris, David Payne, Jhye Richardson (post his first over), Cooper Connolly and Ashton Turner all delivered the goods with the ball, bowling tight spells and picking up a wicket each. Beardman and Hardie did their bit, but couldn't get the Scorchers over the line in this low-scoring thriller.
