5:04 PM IST & 7:34 PM Local Time: That’s it! What a performance this has been from the Perth Scorchers. Man, oh man, they’ve defended a below-par total in absolute style in front of their home crowd. Scorchers have booked their place in the Final of BBL Season 15 and earn the right to host it as well. It’s been a commanding 48-run victory for the men in orange.
Earlier in the day, the Sydney Sixers won the toss and opted to chase. Mitchell Starc made an immediate impact with the ball, striking in his very first over to dismiss Mitchell Marsh for 5. Finn Allen and Aaron Hardie then came together and stitched a steady partnership for the second wicket. Allen took some time to find his timing but once set, he pressed the accelerator, smashing four towering sixes. Just when he was looking set for a big score, he departed at the wrong time, dismissed by Ben Dwarshuis for 49.
The Sixers continued to chip away with regular wickets through the middle phase, with Moises Henriques rotating his bowlers smartly and keeping the Scorchers in check. Perth chose to take the Power Surge very late in the innings and it proved to be a productive move. They scored 23 runs during the Surge, which helped them push closer to the 150-run mark. Valuable contributions down the order from Ashton Turner with 29 off 21 and Jhye Richardson with 20 off 18 ensured the Perth Scorchers finished with a fighting total of 147/9 from their 20 overs. Two wickets apiece for Mitchell Starc (2/32) and Ben Dwarshuis (2/23).
In reply, the Sydney Sixers endured a horror start to their chase. Cooper Connolly made an immediate impact, as Babar Azam was stumped for a duck off just the second ball of the innings. Josh Philippe showed a bit of intent but threw away his wicket for 13 inside the powerplay. The pressure mounted further when Mahli Beardman struck again in the same over, dismissing Moises Henriques for just 2. At the end of the powerplay, the Sixers were in serious trouble at 23/3.
The Sixers kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never really found any momentum in the run chase. The Optus Stadium erupted in the 11th over when Mahli Beardman dismissed the big fish, Steve Smith, for 37 and at that point, the match was almost sealed for the Scorchers. When Smith fell, the Sixers were struggling at 74/6 and running out of options. The Scorchers then mopped up the tail in quick time, bundling the Sydney Sixers out for just 99 in 15 overs. It sealed a dominant 48-run victory for the Perth Scorchers in the Qualifier and booked their place in the Summit clash. Mahli Beardman was simply outstanding on the night, finishing as the standout bowler with impressive figures of 3/20.
