Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians Captain): "(Winning start as captain) Yeah, 1 from 1. It was a good game of cricket. Both teams played good game of cricket. We really pulled back well after a decent start. Little bit of slip up in the end when we dropped a few catches but it seems like bowling in the end has become more difficult now.

(On the bowling performance) Little bit but the wicket in this game looked a little bit dryer than the previous one. The previous game had a little bit of more pace by the looks of it. Initially when we bowled, the ball was holding up and was staying a bit low. Maybe, it was not as cold as it was last game. We had to make a decision which we took but we were pretty clear in what we wanted to do, though.

(Pace off/cross seam deliveries. Was that the plan?) Yes, that was the plan as we had discussed that at the start. Whatever we saw on the previous game and also reading the game tonight that holding your length is the key because if you try to bowl too short or too full, you might travel. So, even after bowling a good ball, you try to back that and make them hit good shots. So, that was the plan. Credit to all the bowlers who executed it pretty well.

(What was the turning point in the game according to him) I think Tilak's knock and the way Shardul bowled. Both of them equally deserve credit. The way Tilak held his knock tonight was simply outstanding. Sometimes, when you lose wickets from the other end, you tend to lose your shape but he kept his shape and kept going. Jacksy (Jacks) came in and played his part too. Yeah, it was a small contribution but it had a big impact in the game. Everybody contributed and that's what we want as a team.

(His experience being a captain of MI) Yeah, like I said, I have captained in a Test match, I have captained in T20Is and now in the IPL. The only game left now is ODI cricket but I don't see that happening. Jokes apart, very happy. Had good fun, good weather, great ground so enjoyed my time."

Tilak Varma (Player of the Match): [on finishing games] I love finishing games. Playing World Cup and international games for country helps me get that experience and confidence. So with that, I think I keep improving my game.

[on adjusting according to the pitch or the plans] We didn't expect the wicket to be like this because the ball was slightly slow and low so it wasn't easy to hit the shots. Punjab struggled for the first 15 overs but Azmatullah and Vishnu - the way they played got them to a good total and we thought to take the game as deep as possible. And I was believing in myself that I could do it. So I was just holding my shape and backing my basics. I was believing in myself that I’d finish the game.

[on the 22-run over] To be honest, when we had the second strategic timeout, I was talking to the coach that just one big over and we will finish off the game. Just keep believing in me, I’ll do it for the team. So that’s what I said, and I was just waiting for that one big over. Unfortunately, it came off Yuzi bhai's over (smiles). But yeah, I’m glad that I finished the game.

[on the chat with Will] To be honest, Will’s innings really helped finish the game. The way he played, I just said to him, 'hold your shape and wait for the slower ones, because the ball is flying here.' If they bowl quick ones and you blindly swing, if it just hits the bat, it’s going. So wait for that slower one - that’s the only ball we were actually slightly struggling to hit the sixes. So he held his shape well, got a few sixes, and they were under pressure."

It’s turning into a flurry of defeats for Punjab Kings, who were flying high in the first half of the season. The all-important month of May has turned into a nightmare for them — five losses on the trot, their worst run since 2020.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, pick up a solid win — one of pride more than anything else. And what an effort from Tilak Varma — sheer class!

Up next, a crucial clash awaits for all of us tomorrow as CSK take on LSG in Lucknow.

For now, this is Pritam Dey signing off on behalf of my co-commentators, Akshay Bhide and Ninaad Dixit, along with scorers/analysts Paras Yadav and Manish Bishnoi, and our special statistician, Ajay, who brought you all the updates from this game. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world!
