8:28 PM IST and 4:58 PM Local Time: A dominating win for South Africa Women in the first WT20I. They beat Ireland Women by 105 runs, courtesy of Sune Luus' all-round brilliance and Laura Wolvaardt's century.
Arriving for the gargantuan chase, Ireland lost a couple of wickets inside the first over, courtesy of Sune Luus' golden arm, outfoxing Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast. Subsequently, Gaby Lewis and Leah Paul steered them to 36 runs inside six overs. Just when the duo tried to take things forward, the required run pressure got the better of them. Chloe Tryon came in and broke the stand, removing Lewis for 30. This made the way for a collapse. From 77/3 in eleven overs, they collapsed to 115 in 18 overs. They lost seven wickets in this phase, with Luus finishing with figures of 4/22.
Opting to bat first on a batting haven, South Africa Women got off to a rocky start after losing one half of their openers early inside the powerplay. However, Laura Wolvaardt joined Sune Luus in the middle and accelerated inside the powerplay. The pair extracted 20 runs in the final over of this phase to sum up 63 runs inside the field restrictions. Quickly, she raced to her fifty, making way for Luus to switch gear. The Ireland bowlers failed to hit the right areas -- offering width and bowling down the leg stump quite often. As a result, the pair orchestrated a 176 runs partnership before Luus departed for 81. Meanwhile, Wolvaardt raced to a century, her second in T20Is. Subsequently, Dane van Niekerk joined hands with the skipper, playing a few fancy strokes to propel the Proteas to 220/2 in 20 overs.
