5:01 PM: South Africa Women win by 76 runs.
South Africa have not just salvaged their pride but mauled the hosts and dented their confidence before the grand finale. It is a thumping 76-run victory that would be remembered for Chloe Tryon's hat-trick at the fag end, which acted as the catalyst and brought about a swift end to the game. But in all fairness, the writing was pretty much on the wall long before.
It is a win that was set up by contributions from the three all-rounders who now seem to have become the backbone of this team. First was obviously Tyron, who earlier scored a sparkling 51-ball-74 during the course of which she also smoked Athapaththu for three successive sixes. She then returned a fifer with the ball which included the wickets of both the openers and that hat-trick towards the end. The second was Annerie Dercksen, whose maiden ODI ton was a treat to watch. She came out to bat when it seemed as if South Africa were losing their way after a decent start. Riding on that splendid knock, the Proteas women went from 85/5 in the 20th over to 315/9 at the end of the 50th.
The third and perhaps the most understated of them was Nadine de Klerk, who has made vital contributions on multiple occasions in this series. Today, her 19-ball-32 propelled the team to their highest ever total against Sri Lanka and then her stunning catch triggered the hat-trick.
It seemed as if Sri Lanka were in the game till the time Chamari Athapaththu was at the crease. She had her share of luck — a dropped catch and a missed stumping — and went onto make a sprightly half-century. But it was Ayobanga Khaka's second spell that turned it around. She dismissed the SL skipper and Nilakshi de Silva in consecutive overs to rock the boat and the hosts never recovered. Before that the three top order batters had each got themselves off to a start but failed to convert it into big scores. Anushka Sanjeewani's unbeaten 32-ball-43 down the order was pugnacious but not enough.
Special mention to Dewmi Vihanga, who impressed one and all with her guile and control over the ball. The off-spinner generated delectable loop and drift to deceive the batters in flight. She also got the ball to zip sharply off the deck and became only the 5th Sri Lankan bowler to pick a fifer in Women's ODIs.
