4:26 PM IST and 9:56 PM Local Time: NEW SOUTH WALES WIN BY 4 WICKETS! THIS IS THEIR 13TH ONE-DAY CUP TITLE. They were the superior side today with bat and ball. Thoroughly deserve the joy of lifting the Dean Jones Trophy and you can see the emotions in the dugout and what it means to each of those players who have put in all the hard work to reach that silverware. It was not all that straightforward when the match had started though.
We had the toss on time and New South Wales had elected to bowl first. However, just after that the heavens opened up, and the Ninja Stadium was covered entirely. The pouring was relentless and we had a 4-hour delay. The equation was such that if we couldn't get a game, Tasmania would be awarded the trophy for finishing at the top of the table.
However, just in the nick of time, the skies cleared up and we had the teams ready for a 22-over contest. The rain had brought about spice in the wicket despite it being covered all through. The NSW pacers extracted everything they could from the wicket and reduced Tasmania to 25/5. Ben Dwarshuis and Seam Abbot found the edge of each of the top for Tasmanian batters. Then a silly unnecessary run out helped them get rid of Jordan Silk.
Matthew Wade and Tim Ward fought back and got the score to 55 but that is when Wade fell to the leg spin of Tanveer Sangha. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals from then on. However, some late flourish with the bat from Nikhil Choudhary helped Tasmania cross 100 and end with 118 All Out. The pick of the bowlers for the New South Wales were Ben Dwarshuis (3-30) and Sean Abbot (3-25).
The score was well below par and Tasmania would have to fight their backsides off to defend something like that. The wicket continued to hold some spice in it as the second innings started. Riley Meredith got Tasmania their first wicket in the first over as he knocked over Josh Philippe. Soon the other opener Sam Konstas was also taken off, and NSW were in trouble at 20-2.
Kurtis Patterson and Matthew Gilkes led a fightback and pushed the score to 57 at a decent rate. However, that is when Nathan Ellis struck and got rid of Gilkes. A mini collapse occurred, as from 57/2, NSW found themselves at 73/5 in a span of 4 overs. Patterson was stranded at one end and kept losing partners at the other end.
The equation came down to 42 off 36 balls and it started to look very edgy. That is when, Joel Davies decided to take matters into his own hands. He smashed Ellis for two boundaries and got 12 off that over. Continued the attack and smoked Mitch Owen for a maximum in the next over. He got dismissed for 20(10) and in the process but made sure the required rate gets in control.
Ben Dwarshuis came out and struck a maximum too. Patterson who had held one end so well then opened up and took down Meredith. He brought up his 50 in style and played the ideal captain's knock. Eventually the pair saw the side home in 20.1 overs and Patterson ended with 52 Not Out! Riley Meredith (2-31) and Nathan Ellis (2-26) were the pick of the bowlers, but it was not enough in the end.
How cinematic that at one point, NSW would have thought that they would have to settle for runners up without getting onto the ground. Well, 4 hours later, they are champions of the One-Day Cup! It was tricky initially, but NSW fought hard to stay in the contest and eventually crossed the winning line to once again have their hands on the Dean Jones Trophy.

The boys get around the two men and pose with the trophy as they scream in joy at the top of their lungs. It has been a special evening for them, and they have pulled of a great victory here at the Ninja Stadium. The celebrations will go on for days and so they should!
