10:09 PM IST, 17:39 Local Time: The highest-ever score in Women's Hundred gets registered in the form of victory as Welsh Fire Women steamroll Trent Rockets Women by 41 runs. They move straight to the top of the league table and when it comes to the Rockets, they falter once again despite climbing earlier in bits and pieces.Arriving to surmount a target of 182 runs, Lizelle Lee and Bryony Smith gave an apt start to Rockets. The first set saw some boundaries here and there and Lee was spectacular with her might and shot selection. But it's the middle and lower middle-order that made a mockery of the rollicking start.
78 runs were registered for the first wicket. After the eighth set, Lee was removed by the experienced Shabnim Ismail who was assisted by a tremendous catch from Freya Davies. Right after, a couple of wickets toppled which included Bryony Smith and Nat-Sciver Brunt.
Smith (48 off 21) fell short of a half-century by two runs and the Trent Bridge-centric unit lost all the momentum. They were well in this chase for a good amount but later on, the lower-middle order failed to step up. Harmanpreet Kaur's 22* off 23 balls did not do justice and the Rockets suffered another drubbing to leave a margin of 41 runs between the two scores.
The Fire blew the opponents like 'fire' with some sensational fielding which deserves some shoutout.
Earlier, The Welsh Fire raced to 181 runs mark after 100 balls, and Tammy Beaumont, the skipper has to be credited highly for it
. The fans at Cardiff got to witness an innings of superior quality from her as she struck her maiden Women's Hundred ton, pumping the scoreboard to shatter some record book pages. This was the highest-ever total in the history of Women's Hundred.
Sophia Dunkley opened with Beaumont with no Hayley Matthews around due to injury. She scored 24 runs off 28 deliveries and added to the 81 runs-opening stand for Welsh. She was replaced by Sarah Bryce who assisted her captain brilliantly.
The debutant- Cassidy McCarthy, and all-rounder Naomi Dattani were all belted away by the class of Beaumont. She went on to become the first-ever Centurian of Women's Hundred after already becoming the first woman to secure a double ton in Test cricket a month back.
However, Beaumont was dismissed at the fag end of the innings for 118 off 61 balls, followed by the wicket of Laura Harris in the final ball of the innings to put a full stop at 181.
