9:11 AM IST, 11:41 PM Local Time: PHEW! The game swung like a pendulum, but brilliant bowling from Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Hasan Mahmud in the final three overs sealed a 7-run win for Bangladesh, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series. Although West Indies lost the game, you simply cannot write them off until the contest is over, and this is yet another proof of that.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Bangladesh were rocked hard by the hosts as they lost three wickets for just 30 runs inside the powerplay. Soumya Sarkar (43) and Jaker Ali (27) steadied the innings with a crucial 50-plus run stand for the fourth wicket but couldn't convert it into a big partnership. Shamim Hossain provided the necessary acceleration towards the end of the innings, smashing a quickfire 27 off just 13 balls, while Mahedi Hasan's unbeaten 27 helped Bangladesh post a competitive 147/6 in their 20 overs.
Akeal Hosein and Obed McCoy bagged a couple of wickets each for the hosts, while Roston Chase and Romario Shepherd chipped in with a solitary wicket.
In pursuit of 147 runs, West Indies got off to a horrible start as they lost a flurry of wickets from the outset, courtesy of Mahedi Hasan's impressive bowling. Johnson Charles tried to put the batting back on track but could only deliver a 12-ball 20-run cameo.
The hosts were reeling at 61/7 in the 12th over, and Bangladesh were on cloud nine. However, Rovman Powell single-handedly turned their smiling faces into tense expressions as the skipper pummeled the bowlers to all corners of the park, bringing up his fifty off just 28 balls.
Powell added a crucial 67 runs for the 8th wicket alongside Romario Shepherd, who contributed a vital 22 runs off 17 balls. The equation was reduced to 20 runs from 18 balls, and it seemed the hosts would cross the line comfortably with the skipper still at the crease. However, fate took a twist as Taskin Ahmed conceded just 2 runs in the 18th over and broke the vital partnership by trapping Shepherd. With 10 runs needed off the final over, Hasan Mahmud held his nerve, removing both Powell and Alzarri Joseph, and restricting West Indies to 140/10 in 20 overs.
Mahedi Hasan starred with the ball for the visitors, grabbing 4 crucial wickets. Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed chipped in with 2 wickets each, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rishad Hossain contributed one wicket each to the West Indies' downfall.
