10:42 PM IST and 1:12 PM Local Time | Skipper Hayley Kristen Matthews has led her team to a victory in a low scoring T20 game and has levelled the three-match T20I series against the Proteas 1-1.
South Africa Women got off to a slow start early in the innings as Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits played too many dot balls. They lost Marizanne Kapp for a bronze duck. Nadine de Klerk added 20 runs on the board but the top scorer of the Protea innings was Annerie Dercksen. Dercksen swung her bat in the death overs to score 21 off 17 balls hitting 2 boundaries and that helped her side to reach 114 at the end of the 20th over.
For West Indies Women, Afy Fletcher took 2 wickets. Hayley Matthews and Jahzara Claxton shared a couple of wickets between them.
Coming to chase the run, West Indies got a promising start as Qiana Joseph hit Mlaba for two boundaries in the very first over. But afterwards, Qiana became very slow and could score only 9 off 15 after the first over. Hayley Matthews took his time and found a few sporadic boundaries in the powerplay.
The Caribbean skipper got a very little assistance from the rest of the batters. Shawnisha Hector got out for 3, Shemaine Campbelle started off with a boundary but could only muster 7, Chinelle Henry scored just 3. But Hayley decided to take the game deep and she completed her fifty in the 50th ball of her innings.
When 16 runs were needed off two overs, she tonked Ayabonga Khaka for a maximum to start the over and later added a boundary to take the equation down to 3 off the final over. Jannillea Glasgow hit Nadine de Klerk for a boundary in the second ball of the final over to secure the victory for her side.
Hayley Matthews remained unbeaten on 63 off 56 balls with 5 fours and a maximum and took her team over the line. She earned the well-deserved player of the match award for her fantastic innings.
