Earlier in the evening, Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to bat first, making a strong start despite losing Miles Hammond for 13 in the fourth over to Moeen Ali. They reached 43/1 at the end of the Powerplay before D'Arcy Short and Joseph Phillips took charge with a superb 95-run partnership that put the visitors firmly on top. Phillips played an important hand of 42 off 25 balls before falling in the 13th over, while D'Arcy Short continued to dominate the bowling attack, accelerating brilliantly after his fifty and eventually departing for a magnificent 82 off 50 balls.
Although Gloucestershire lost wickets at regular intervals in the closing overs and surrendered some momentum, a late cameo from Duan Jansen, who remained unbeaten on 12 off 9 balls and struck three successive boundaries in the final over, helped propel them to an imposing 217/6 from their 20 overs.
In reply, Yorkshire needed an explosive start in pursuit of the daunting target and Adam Lyth did his best to provide exactly that. The left-hander came out with positive intent and kept the scoreboard moving, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Jonny Bairstow, William Luxton and James Wharton all fell cheaply inside the Powerplay as Yorkshire adopted an all-out attacking approach. Despite the setbacks, they raced to 65/3 at the end of 6 overs, keeping themselves in the hunt.
