Babar Azam recently sent a strong message to his detractors by smashing a blistering 52 ball century for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2026 season. The knock, which included 6 fours and 4 sixes, propelled Zalmi to a massive 118 run victory over Quetta Gladiators and secured their spot as the first team to qualify for the playoffs. However, the celebration was short lived as critics began to dissect the relevance of franchise success compared to international pressure.

The Gap Between PSL and International Cricket

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali was vocal about his concerns, suggesting that high scores in T20 leagues can be misleading. While acknowledging Babar's quality, Ali emphasized the difference in bowling standards and stakes during ICC events.

"There is a world of difference between international cricket and the PSL," Basit noted. "If Babar shows even fifty percent of this standard in international matches, we will be the first to praise him. The problem is our performances in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 ICC events. You cannot mix PSL success with those failures; these are not top international bowling attacks."

The Stability Factor: Akmal’s Perspective

Offering a different angle, Kamran Akmal pointed toward the support system Babar enjoys at Peshawar Zalmi compared to the national team. Akmal argued that the stability of the Zalmi batting order featuring names like Kusal Mendis and Aaron Hardie allows Babar the freedom to play his natural game.

"In the Pakistan team, there is no settled batting lineup like this. Constant experimentation with his position hurts both him and the team," Akmal stated. "At Zalmi, if Mendis falls, Bracewell or Samad are there. That support is essential for any top player to flourish consistently."

Zalmi’s Dominant Run Continues

Regardless of the debate, Babar's leadership has been undeniable this season. His unbeaten 100 took Zalmi to a towering 255/3. In response, Quetta Gladiators crumbled for just 137, with Mohammad Basit and Ali Raza picking up three wickets each. While the 'Babar Azam debate' continues to divide the fraternity, Peshawar Zalmi sits comfortably at the top of the table, looking like the team to beat in 2026.
