The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. In a move that signals a shift toward testing bench strength, the selectors have handed a maiden call up to uncapped pace bowling all-rounder Abdul Gaffar Saqlain. However, the squad list is most notable for the absence of veteran speedsters Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed, who have both been left out of the initial fixtures.
Fresh Faces Lead the Charge
With a packed international schedule ahead, Bangladesh is prioritizing player rotation over ICC ranking points. The inclusion of the 23 year old Saqlain is the highlight of this strategy. Having previously represented the nation in three T20 matches during the 2023 Asian Games, Saqlain earns his first full international call up thanks to his ability to clock high speeds and provide lower-order power hitting a profile the BCB believes aligns with the modern T20 template used by teams like India and England.
Joining him is the promising Ripon Mondol, who has been rewarded for his consistent wicket taking performances in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The selectors are eager to see if these youngsters can translate their domestic success to the international stage against a formidable New Zealand outfit.
Why Mustafizur and Taskin Are Missing
The exclusion of the core pace trio Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Nahid Rana is a calculated move by the management. Chief selector Habibul Bashar explained that Taskin and Nahid Rana are being rested to ensure they remain fresh for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman has been granted leave to rejoin the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026.
"We wanted to try some new faces in the T20 side," Bashar stated. "Nahid needs rest after the ODI series and before the Test matches. For Saqlain, we specifically wanted a bowling all-rounder who can clear the ropes, which is why he was picked."
Squad Composition and Captaincy
Litton Das will lead the side, supported by Saif Hassan, who has been named vice-captain. The squad remains competitive with the inclusion of aggressive hitters like Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain, alongside the spin expertise of Mahedi Hasan and Nasum Ahmed. Shoriful Islam will lead the pace attack in the absence of the senior pros.
Bangladesh T20I Squad: Litton Das (C), Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Saif Hassan (VC), Shamim Hossain, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali Anik, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Rishad Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Ripon Mondol, Mohammad Saifuddin, Abdul Gaffar Saqlain.
Looking Ahead
The three match T20I series is scheduled to begin on April 27 at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium in Chattogram. This series serves as a critical warm-up before Bangladesh transitions into the longer format for a two-match Test series against Pakistan starting May 8.
